Aarya - Tamil Movie Review

Aarya - Bed-Sore ya

The story and screenplay of “Aarya” are so convoluted, that the film has nothing to stand on. Director Balasekharan, who has already dished two films “Love Story” and “Thulli Thirindha Kaalam” to his credit, seems to have had torrid times putting this one together. He should thank stars Madhavan, Bhavana and Prakash Raj for helping him to salvage the film which was otherwise destined for archives.

The plot centers around…

Deepika(Bhavana) is a carbon copy of her brother Kasi(Prakash Raj), a don with numerous business interests - legal and illegal. Kasi secures admission for her only sister in a Chennai Medical College by murdering another girl named Deepika. With her brother behind her, Deepika goes about terrorizing the students, the faculty and even the dean.

Aarya(Madhavan), a final-year medical student joins the Chennai College after getting transfer from Coimbatore. Deepika is unnecessarily hostile to well-behaved and law-abiding Aarya and harasses him.

Not withstanding her increasing tantrums, Aarya remains calm; but gives her a tit for tat. However, she soon gets attracted to hero and decides to marry him at any cost with her brother, Kasi’s support. Aarya turns down the proposal on the grounds of social status, thereby incurring the wrath of Kasi. The rest of the story is hackneyed with one of a nice guy and a baddie fighting it out.

It is Prakash Raj, a seasoned actor, who enlivens the whole drama. Madhavan, A chocolate hero has done his part well. Bhavana is given a difficult role, a character with negative shades and she sometimes overdoes to the challenge. Vadivelu along with Prakash and Madhavan-Bhavana pair provide some comic moments.

The movie’s story might be different, but it needs a tight screenplay and Aarya suffers in this main aspect. Even though logic cannot be expected from such commercial movies, many scenes are senseless to say the least. Many scenes are unwanted and many end abruptly, which affects the pace of the movie. But some scenes do pisses off like the one where Prakashraj decides to send the Collector and then an Inspector to speak to Madhavan about his sister’s proposal. But the Climax which is the life blood of any movie is infact the biggest negative in this film. ‘Will any royal thug, go weak on his knees towards a middle class man pleading for a proposal’? Only the man behind lens has to answer this knotty question.

One sequence to add on is, when a scene is shown between Maddy and Vadivelu, when he has a hand shake with the hero, you can hear the bones crunch, and the ribs crack. This is highly exploitative and it’s done with the sole intention of making you turn away your face in disgust, like you do when you’re watching a gruesome horror film.

The music score by Manisharma is average. Cinematography is one of the negative aspects of the movie, there is nothing new to talk about and in one particular scene we are able to see the camera and the rest of the unit through Madhavan’s Sun glasses. Such atrocious mistakes are unpardonable. Editing should have been more crisper. The fight sequences doesn’t get well with the narrative.

On the whole Arya is a no show, quite few scenes are watchable and people who are great fan of Prakash raj will get away with disappointment. But the director’s thought of doing anything in the name of commercial cinema bites his hand back.

With more minus points than plus points, Aarya falls under the “sinking ship” category.
