Azhagiya ThamizhMagan – Decorous drive from Bharathan
Breaking his normal strategy, Vijay with different drive has come up with Azhagiya ThamizhMagan proves his ability of taking up exceptional themes. With stylish and handsome looks he captivates the attention of masses. Bharathan kick-starting his directorial venture is dressed with appreciable work using Vijay’s strength including dual role concept with thrilling action packed romantic story. Though similar to the storylines of Final Destination and Tom cruise starrer Minority Report and Sandara Bullocks Premonitions, he has presented the flick in a modified manner using the concept of Extra Sensory Perception.
The story centers on Guru (Vijay), a jovial youngster who is a Business Management student and athlete too. Leading a happy life with his friends (Sathyan, Santhanam) Abhinaya enters into his life, first comes encounters involving between these two and then love, when she happens to know about Guru’s sacrifice and good heartedness. Convincing elders of both sides, Guru and Abhinaya get permission granted for their wedlock.
Then comes the dawn of newfangled problem as Guru starts visualizing sets of bizarre that become real in real life. He is drawn into a horrible situation when he visualizes a premonition of himself stabbing Abhinaya to death. Fearing for her life, he moves away to Mumbai to save her life.
Over there, he is tugged into furthermore terrific berth as he see Prasad (Vijay) who has similar identities of Guru. Hit by an accident Guru is hospitalized in Mumbai while Prasad movies to Chennai, where Abhinaya mistakes him as Guru.
Second half of the story takes audience for a spine chilling thriller ride with twists and turns and does premonition happen real in life forms nitty-gritty of the story….
As mentioned earlier, Bharathan has done a decent job and thanks to Vijay for taking up a different film proving his ability. Though not able to show appropriate variations in appearance and voice modulations, he excels in portraying difference with stylish aspect.
Shriya Charan has nothing to do with script, other than appearing in alluring outfits showcasing excess of glamour. It would have been nice, if Bharathan had some control over her performance and dance too. Especially, for the song sequence ‘Maduraikku Pogadhadi’, she could have done a better job whereas Vijay compensates her flaw with his commendable performance. Namitha for glitz ‘n’ glamour appears for couple of scenes and a song, but has nothing to emote. Santhanam and Sathyan add to the hilarious part with their good sense of comedy while Ganja Karuppu has been included for no reason.
Speaking about music, A R Rahman has done a splendid task for both songs as well background score. ‘Pon Magal Vandhal’ is a stupendous presentation both in all aspects. ‘Valayapatti’ is somewhat unwanted in the frame, but seems like it’s just for Vijay fans. Choreography by Lawrence blended with Vijay’s presentation for the title song is a great treat to the eyes
Overall, although most of the Vijay fans may not take delight in this flick, but a grand fiesta for film lovers who yearned out to watch a different film and Vijay too.
