Chandiramathi - Tamil Movie Review

February - 10 - 2008

Some debutant directors have it all sorted out in paper. But when it comes to translating those ideas on to the screen, they falter due to lack of experience and an understanding of the medium, while there are others who are not clear about what they want to convey or how to convey it, whether it’s on paper or on screen. What results is a confused screenplay, random episodes, jerky narration and a futile attempt to make all converge into a coherent whole. ‘Chandiramathi’ falls into the second category.

There are multi-tracks running in the script, each appearing randomly, the director vainly trying to coordinate them all into a single plot. There is the ghost of a woman, Chandiramathi, who terrorises the villagers and is blamed for killing many women in the area. There are the two sons of the village bigwig who rape and murder women, and take turns to go to jail: Their motive being vendetta for their father’s murder decades ago.

There are the eloped lovers who seek refuge at a friend’s place in the village. And there are the policemen who flit in and out of the village whenever a killing happens, but don’t seem much bothered about taking the investigation forward. All these episodes are haphazardly thrust into the script.

That the lead pair totally lack any screen presence doesn’t make it any better. Added to that is the director-actor, who appears in a lengthy role, dances and fights and goes much beyond the comic role of the hero’s friend he had etched for himself.

Is it misplaced confidence or sheer naivety which made the director believe that he could carry off a project without equipping himself adequately to handle the medium?
