Kalloori – Down the memory lane

Yup! Were you yearning to watch a flick glued with themes of college lives? Fine, then Kalloori would be the right option. If ‘Kadhal’ was an emotional movie that melted down the hearts, Kalloori in no way differs from it, but up to some extent. Well, cinefundas.com takes delight in pluming Director Balaji Sakthivel for handling a script composed of characters performed by debutants. Themes centering on college lives are something used to Kollywood, but Kalloori takes a step ahead, with a different approach of presentation. Debutants don’t make us feel, we are watching a reality show rather than just movie that winds up in couple of hours.

Kalloori revolves around the lives of group of effulgent friends poring around in Government Arts College. Each one is glued with their own problems in families and it’s completely belittled when they are together. Muthu (Akil) remains one among them and is a shining athlete who falls in love at first sight with Shobana (Thamanna).

In contrary to this group of friends, Thamanna is badly traumatized and that’s evident with her silent look. Once at a point, they get for the rescue of Shobana when she is ragged by seniors. Reciprocating to her aid, she breaks out in revealing her dark past where she lost her mother in an accident a month earlier. Also Shobana utters that she wouldn’t be continuing in the college for a long time as she is awaiting admission in Birla College of History in New Delhi. Fine! The reason Shobana states that her aim of taking up IAS examination.

Kayilu (Bhagyalakshmi) acts more matured in the group and always believe that true friends never turn lovers. Also expects the same from her friends and that sets out to be a twisting point. All of sudden blooms a feel of love between Muthu and Shobana, but respecting their friend’s view, they suppress their feelings. Rest of the flick deals with whether they express their love or not with a scandalizing climax.

As of Direction, Balaji Sakthivel depicts realisms of how students would students of Government Arts College behave? Sharing their food and especially their mode of commutation divulges of their family background. Thamanna has simply suited herself to the character of Shobana and Akil has done an appreciable performance. Akil has a bright future if improves more and more skills.

Sivaji taking revenge on Adi, frames the second half. Being ditched by Adi, Sivaji goes brainy and brawny ways to fulfill his dreams in opening an University and Hospital. Does sivaji fulfill his dreams? Forms the riveting climax. Last 20 minutes of the movie is the Highlight. Rajini with tonsured head is ostentatious. His body language and dialogue delivery is simply superb. The last 20 minutes of the movie steals the entire show and thus impresses us all.

And others who have breathed life on characters rather than just performing under auteur’s direction. Joshua Sridhar does a splendid job in both aspects of background scoring and songs. Especially, the song ‘Sariya Idhu Thavara’ is a visual treat and cinematographer is the one to be appreciated here.

Well, if you are obliging me to figure out negative traits of the flick, I would rather say there isn’t much to say. But it would have been nice if the flick was presented avoiding bit of sentimental aspects that have already been depicted in other films earlier. Also some of the scenes are lifeless and speaking about comedy tracks is excellent, but it’s boring after sometime as repetition of same sort.

Balaji Sakthivel has of course done another appreciable job of depicting some real life incidents of how political conflicts straiten lives of normal lives of peoples.

So, Kalloori is not a movie that simply juxtaposes romance and other factors of college life, but depicts the real essence of friendship and love. This flick is not only for college going youngster, but a movie that can be watched by all age groups.
