Naalaiya Pozhuthum Unnodu - Tamil Movie Review

February - 10 - 2008

At first look, the film may seem like just a simple rich-girl-poor-boy romance and the hurdles the duo have to cross. But the innovative way in which the debutant director has knotted the end, and the final twist to the tale, gives a whole new feel to the film, and lifts it from the ordinary to a subliminal level.

As the film impels, we see Jaivarman, a popular novelist, on a story-telling session to a keen female listener. Velu Prabakaran and Rohini make brief appearances in their respective roles and leave their mark. It’s not just their dignified demeanour but also in the way their roles are made to fit into the script and wind up the tale, that these characters gain importance.

As Jaivarman narrates the story, it unfolds before our eyes. It takes us into a village, and into the lives of Shakti and Nangai (Prithvi, Kartika). Childhood playmates-turned-lovers, the spoke in the wheel is her mother, the status conscious panchayat president.(Gouri). Shakti and his parents are forced to leave the place and live with his uncle in the city. And when he learns of her marriage, the distressed Shakti tries to come to terms with life. But the love story has not ended and it’s a shocking reality that awaits the lover and the audience.

The end is a surpise one. It’s what you woudn’t have anticipated, and one which is sure to touch a chord. If the earlier scenes are predictable, it’s the freshness of the pairing that makes them watchable. It’s the second film for Prithvi (son of actor Pandiarajan) and he has wisely chosen characters that suit his boy-next-door looks. A spontaneous actor, expressions come naturally to him. Kartika, chirpy in the lighter scenes, could work more on her expressions in the emotional ones. An actress who draws your attention is Gauri, a TV compere who has done a brief role in ‘Pithamagan’. With her handsome looks and haughty demeanour, Gauri plays her role with flair. The character that strikes a wrong chord is the female journalist who plays Shakti’s supporter in the later part.

‘Naalaiya…’ is an effort worth appreciating by first-time director Moorthy Kannan (he’s apprenticed under director P Vasu). Like many of the recent debutant film-makers, the director has made an effort to bring in some variation and novelty within an otherwise predictable scenario.
