It’s the debut work of director Jesudas who has apprenticed under director Shaji Kailas. It’s a plot that goes on a different line. The paali instrument, the hero’s passion for its music, and his coming to India to do research on it, are all novel situations and handled creditably. The location is suitable and the dialect and nativity maintained. But irrelevant scenes and songs that have been forced in distract from the mood and feel of the film.
Richard (Sre), a student from the London Music College, comes to a remote village to do research on paali, a rare muscal instrument played in the temple there. The village chief’s daughter’s name too happens to be Paali (Rimpi).
And this results in minor misunderstandings and amusement, when the girl berates Richard for bandying about her name. But this paves the way for her getting attracted to him. Paali’s growing fondness for Richard causes heartburnings in Kaarai (Pagala), who is Paali’s cousin and intended groom. And when Richard disappears, presumed killed, it is Kaarai who is hauled up by the cops as the prime suspect.
The first half goes a bit slow, and it’s in the second half, after Richard’s disappearance, that the narration picks up, with an element of suspense thrown in. The debutants Sre (it’s his home production), and Rimpi (an Assamese actress) play their parts adequately. Sre could improve on his expressions and dance movements, there’s a fine performance by Pagala as Kaarai.
‘Paali’ would have turned out better if the director was more focused on his central theme and not got distracted by irrelevant situations and forced in dance numbers.
