Veeraapu – Emotional Saga

The maiden success of Thalainagaram has helped director Sundar.C establish a career option as hero in Kollywood. He plays an arrogant youth in Veeraappu, which is directed by his one-time associate Badri.

A remake of Malayalam hit Spatikam, Veeraappu stars Gopika as the female lead to Sundar C. Thilakan and Mohanlal enacted the father and son’s roles respectively in Spatikam. It was a runaway hit in Malayalam.

Veeraappu stars Prakash Raj and Sundar C. The former plays the father of Sundar C in this film. Veeraapu is woven around the relationship between a father and son. Parents, especially fathers, cherish dreams of their son’s career and nourish certain aspirations for their son. But, more often than not, the sons take a different direction altogether.

The story centers around Prakashraj playing the role of the father, a principled mathematician Vedakkannu. Sundar is his fumbling son Pandi. Pandi lacks mathematical skills but possesses a rare talent for assembling electronic gadgets. Father and son differ in their interests and outlooks. In an incident which marks a turning point in their lives and relationship, Vedakkannu prompts Pandi to give up his self-respect which lands him behind bars. Pandi’s ego reacts in a different way. From Pandi, the ordinary man emerges Puli Pandi, the fearless ruffian.

Pandi’s father disowns him from home and keeps him aloof from family connections. As Pandi trudges through life, he finds his solace in Bharathy(Gopika). The rest of the story deals with how the father and son finally get reconciled?

Veerappu is the first directorial attempt of Director Badri. He has also handled the screenplay and dialogues for the movie. His breezy story-telling ability and family-centric dialogues make Veerappu watchable. Sundar C. has shown his acting abilities to a fair extent, bringing the transformation of Pandi to Puli Pandi. Prakashraj is at his usual best, as a tough father.

The credit goes to Prakash Raj and Sundar C. Both have contributed well on the screen. It is a story that we come across in every household, that the director has tried to render the story in a lighter vein.

Vivek’s comedy is enjoyable. He in the company of Anju tickles the funny bone in the audience. Fight sequences by Thalapathi Dinesh are too cloddish. On the flip side, violence and sound of wallops could have been reduced and instead the bonding between father and son should have been focused more.

D. Imman has come out with some lilting numbers like Pona Varuveero and Puliya poo jeicha kadhal are appreciable.

Produced by Sujatha Vijayakumar, Veerappu is a clean family film with emotional potboiler and is sure to appease the women folk.
