What’s the film all about:
A thriller, Manthan – Ek Kashmakash dwells on the underworld gang wars and also focuses on the entire socio political scenario, which gets affected in the process. The protagonist, Dev (newcomer Sanjay Kumar) is a nuclear scientist who has been selected by the defense ministry to undergo further training at IIT Powai, Mumbai. But sadly enough, once he starts his unique project to stop film piracy, he gets entangled in the underworld wars.
Dev sacrifices his family in the gang war. The scene reminds us of a direct lift from the Sholay sequence where Gabbar guns down Thakur’s entire family. Dev decides to seek revenge…
What we liked:
The film undoubtedly has a good storyline with a social message; an entertaining way to educate the masses. The story has characters such as don Dawoodia Pathan and Khatri which are based on real life characters such as Dawood Ibrahim and Gulshan Kumar. The film rightly shows the hero’s dilemma in handling his personal problems and his passion to do well for his country.
What we didn’t like:
The film really has nothing to boast of. Bad editing, poor choreography, disastrous dubbing are just some of the major flaws in this film. The minor ones are too many to count. Newcomer Kradhika, who plays Sanjay aka Dev’s love interest in the film, needs to polish her acting skills a lot. Her expressions need to be more convincing. Disjointed sequences make the film tedious to watch. The scene where Dev kills Khatri at a deserted construction site leaves a bitter taste in one’s mouth. The scene could have been handled in a more subtle manner. The scene at the bar (Chipkali Bar to be more precise) where Dev comes looking for Khatri, appears comical because of its tacky presentation. And you just can’t miss out on the mind-blowing (literally) lyrics of the item number that says, Yeh raat karwat badal rahi hai… teri nazar hai jaise chipkali… mere badan pe phisal rahi hai… Now, can you beat that?
