Pourudu - Telugu Movie Review

February - 11 - 2008

Raaj Aditya, a protégé of Priyadarshan, made his debut as director through ‘Pourudu’. Though the storyline is not much impressive and lacks novelty, he tried his best to bring out the movie with a different taking in portraying the gang war between two groups. Sumant, made a good attempt to change his image as a soft hero to an action hero. ‘When society fails power will rise, when power fails, a man will rise,’ is the basic theme behind the storyline.

Ajay (Sumant) successfully completes his preliminary and main exams in IAS Exams and is getting ready for final interview. Pandu (Suman), the right hand of the local mafia don Ali Bhai (Nazar), is his father. Ajay doesn’t like his father’s profession, though he loves him very much. Kasi (Kota Srinivasa Rao) runs a rival gang in the same city opposite Ali Bhai. In order keep himself off from the utterances of the public that he was the son of a goon, Ajay concentrates on studies and reaches to the stage of completing IAS. Samyukta (Kaajal) is a student of a dance school and she falls in love with Ajay. CI Hussain (Subbaraju) wants nab all these anti-social elements but could not do so due to their political influence. Accidentally, Pandu comes to know that Ali Bhai is the real mafia don and is not a gentleman and gets killed by Kasi and his son at the instance of Ali Bhai. Did Ajay reach his target? Or did he resort to revenge activities against his father’s killers? What was the fate of the mafia dons and gangs? Answers to all these questions form part of the remaining story.

Sumant did justice to his role as an angry young man. He developed his body language and maintained good ease in histrionics. Kaajal filled the glamour slot and she is very cute all through the film. Her character moulded well and it helped in supporting the hero’s character at good and bad times. Suman once again gave an impressive performance as a father and excelled in sentiment scenes. Nazar, Kota, Dharmavarapu Subrahmanyam and all the other artistes did justice to their respective roles. Comedy by Ali and MS Narayana was not impressive, while Brahmanandam once again excelled in delivering good comedy..

Cinematography by Sudhakar Yekkanti is a highlight, dialogues by Marudhuri Raja are average. Debutant director Raaj Aditya maintained good suspense over the real villain. The movement of the story is impressive though there is no novelty. Music by Manisharma is just okay. Only a couple of songs were melodious and good to watch.

The poor storyline failed to impress the audiences at all. The director failed to convince the audiences by converting him into a goon in the second half, though in the name of revenge, as it was not his wont right from the beginning. In the first half, the hero continue to say that he was against violence and one should not take law into hands and in the second half does something against it. SS Creations production values are okay. An average film for this Sankranthi..
