Rameswaram - Tamil Movie Review

February - 11 - 2008

‘Rameswaram’, the film, depicts at one level the Sri Lankan ethnic strife and the plight of the Tamils who come as refugees to the coastal town of Rameswaram. And weaved into it is the love story of a young refugee, Jeevan, and Vasanthi (Jeeva, Bhavana), the daughter of the local bigwig (Lal). With the debutant director not quite sure of how much importance to give each and how to balance them, does justice to neither. So neither the love story touches a chord nor the plight of the refugees.

Jeeva’s recent releases showcased him as an actor who likes to take on challenging roles. But with the script failing him here, his effort to play a youth caught in a dilemna between his love for an Indian girl, and his deep concern for his people back home, is wasted.

Bose Venkat as the local policeman Saravanan, betrothed to Vasanthi and trying to make life difficult for Jeevan, is more of a caricature, Saravanan’s antics providing some unintended humour.

In a smaller role Sampath as the crippled refugee, getting a good scene were he goes to Vasanthi’s house and speaks his mind, makes his presence felt.

Taking a serious issue and packaging it with routine ingredients that go to make a potboiler does not always work out well. For, unless the two are suitably blended, it would end up as a film that neither entertains nor becomes a meaningful experience.

And that’s what has happened to ‘Rameswaram’.
