27 Dresses – English Movie Review

February - 14 - 2008

Another romantic comedy hits the scene, what a shock right? Well, “27 Dresses” fits the mold of most romantic comedies; however this one has a special charm to it. I really enjoyed the film and the new phenom, Katherine Heigl, added to the charm. Writer, Aline Brosh McKenna spins a nice story and Director, Anne Fletcher makes the writing come alive on screen. Is there anything groundbreaking or earth shattering in the movie? No. Nowadays, it is tough to be completely original in the romantic comedy genre, so the best hope is for a good story with good acting. “27 Dresses” delivers both a good story and good acting.

Jane (Katherine Heigl) is always the bridesmaid, twenty-seven times that is, and never the bride. She is the perfect bridesmaid with super wedding planning skills and a meticulous eye for detail. By day, Jane works for George (Edward Burns) who she is secretly madly in love with. Of course, George is totally clueless to Jane’s feelings for him. Enter Kevin (James Marsden) who stumbles upon Jane while doing a two wedding in one night trick and becomes fascinated with her. Meanwhile, Jane’s younger sister, Tess (Malin Akerman), swoops into town and falls in love with none other than, George. Naturally, Kevin says he is writing a story about Tess’ wedding for the newspaper, but instead writes a story about Jane and her twenty-seven dresses. Without ruining the ending, Kevin seeks to repair the damage done by the article and Jane seeks to make sure George knows what he is getting into by marrying Tess.

As stated earlier, originality is tough when it comes to romantic comedies. Normally, it is boy meets girl. Boy has girl and loses girl. Boy tries to get girl back. Chemistry between Jane and Kevin really keeps “27 Dresses” from being just another ordinary romantic comedy. James Marsden plays Kevin and this time he is not a super-hero like in “X-Men”, but just an ordinary newspaper writer who ends up being human afterall. Coming off her success in “Knocked Up”, Katherine Heigl, brings that charm and likeability to the big screen again. She is no “Izzy” like on the hit television show, Grey’s Anatomy, but instead a likeable and a character not always in crisis.

While “27 Dresses” is not ground breaking there is a level of fun about it with a couple of very memorable scenes. After seeing the movie, Elton John’s “Benny and the Jets” will be a pleasant memory. Heigl portrays a realness about her which can make even the most average scene a little better and most of the scenes with Marsden are special.
