“Over Her Dead Body†isn’t really a horrible movie, but it is by no stretch of the imagination a good movie. Romantic comedies should by definition have some comedy in them. While there is some romance, the other half of the equation is missing. During parts of the film, I kept looking at my watch to see when the end would finally come. Other parts kept me mildly entertained, but they were few and far between.
Bridezilla, Kate (Eva Longoria Parker), on her wedding day is frantically putting the last minute touches her on her perfect event as she prepares to marry veterinarian, Henry (Paul Rudd). Unfortunately, she is killed in a freak accident just hours before the ceremony. Henry has a tough time getting over the sudden death of his fiancé which does not go unnoticed by his sister, Chloe (Lindsay Sloane). Chloe conspires with a psychic named Ashley (Lake Bell) to give a reading to Henry telling him he needs to move on and find a new girlfriend. Unbeknownst to Ashley, bossy Kate did not get clear instructions in what is supposed to be heaven and is back on earth in ghostly form. Henry begins to have feelings for Chloe which does not sit well with Kate who feels she needs to protect Henry from Ashley. Kate uses her spirit presence to do all he can to stop Ashley from having a relationship with Henry.
Eva Longoria Parker plays the same character, Gabrielle, on the hit television series Desperate Housewives in “Over Her Dead Bodyâ€Â. Kate is rude, bossy, and domineering (sound familiar?), which ultimately leads to her death. Parker plays the role well, because she has had several seasons of experience as Gabrielle. She is not really the problem in this movie, it is the story itself.
Lake Bell and Paul Rudd do a decent job and have some good chemistry. Paul Rudd plays the glib Henry and takes a while to get used to but after a while his style of humor (or lack thereof) becomes apparent. Jason Biggs plays Dan, the gay business partner of Ashley. Ashley does catering as her main job to make ends meet between psychic readings and tries to be funny but does not do the trick. Clearly, it is a talented cast; however they cannot save the movie.
Writer and Director Jeff Lowell created some good characters but writes dialogue that is not funny and a movie that is pretty predictable. I found myself laughing only a couple of times which is not really a good thing for a comedy. Lowell takes a shot at some slapstick humor that really doesn’t work and certainly the dialogue doesn’t either. Perhaps Lowell would have been better off making “Over Her Dead Body†a horror movie.
