A first for the year, a creepy movie that is pretty creepy. “The Eye†made me jump a few times and had a decent storyline and acting, but just missed being a really good movie with a weak ending. “The Eye†is a remake of the Hong Kong film, “Jian Guiâ€. Writer Sebastian Gutierrez wrote a pretty good screenplay and then just keeps an ending that is supposed to have a big twist, but fails in its attempt to shock.
Violinist Sydney Wells (Jessica Alba) is quite talented and is also blind. Blinded at the age of five, she has lived her whole life in a world of darkness but becomes a successful musician. Sydney receives an eye transplant that allows her to see into supernatural world. She tries to find out why her new eyes give her this curse with the help of her doctor, Paul Faulkner (Alessandro Nivola). As the two draw closer to the truth, Sydney realizes that her curse may actually be a blessing in disguise.
“The Eye†is head and shoulders above the latest Asian remake “One Missed Callâ€. While a wild premise, the movie has a little substance and is not just a goofy exercise in “suspension of disbeliefâ€. I can honestly say a little part of me actually enjoyed the feel of the movie and the cinematography itself.
Jessica Alba seems to have progressed as an actress by putting in a good performance. She has come a long way from her performance in “Good Luck Chuck†as the clumsy love interest of Dane Cook. Perhaps Alba needs more serious roles and should take a break from the ditzy girl characters.
As I watched the movie, I was engrossed and waiting for the big pay-off at the end of the movie. Disappointingly, the big pay-off never came. Sydney unravels the mystery with her out of the blue love interest, Dr. Faulkner, and then the movie goes flat. I felt cheated and remembering whispering to myself, “You have got to be kiddingâ€. So be prepared for a wind up that does not live up to the quality of the movie itself.
