Puli Varudhu - Tamil Movie Review

February - 16 - 2008

Dreams and their effect on the human psyche is narrated in a light-hearted way by debutant director G V Kumar in ‘Puli Varudhu’.

Ramesh (Ramesh) has these recurrent nightmares where he sees his dear ones dying. He even has dreams of marrying a girl he’s never met, and seeing her die too. Ramesh meets the girl of his dreams, falls for her and marries her. Apprehensive of the rest of his dreams too turning into a reality, Ramesh takes precautions to circumvent the situations, that in his dreams had led to tragic deaths.

The situations here generate a fair degree of suspense and humour. But the problem is that the narrative shuttles between the serious and the light-hearted, the stark grim dreams of the hero contrasted with the comic effect it has on him and his dear ones. The scenes of Ramesh’s visits to psychiatrists and their explanation of his dreams leave much to be desired.

Ramesh fits in with ease. Mallika flashes those wide smiles of hers frequently, and overdoes the bubbly act. The life of the film is Karunas. As the hero’s friend living in constant fear of being run over by a lorry (one of Ramesh’s dreams), Karunas gives some delightful expressions and generates a lot of humour.

‘Puli Varudu’ can at most be described as a debutant director’s effort to give a film different from the routine ones.
