Sila Nerangalil – Splendid thriller
Director Jayaraj marked his partial entry into Kollywood with the famous song ‘Lajavathiye’ from the film 4 students before 3 years. Winning accolades both in the box-office of Malayalam film industry, he is one of the most critically acclaimed National award winner for his excellent movies. Now comes he with an usual theme in the box that you would have already seen in yesteryear Tamil Movies like Yaar Nee, Nenjam Marapadhillai, Enakkul Oruvan and if you need furthermore reference, then recently released Bollywood blockbuster Om Shanthi Om.
Yup! The story isn’t much stunning and the point where Director Jayaraj strides is with his innovative style of designing screenplay and well-defined characters. Fate marking end of lives for a couple, reunites them in their re-incarnation. Well, we have been used to these sort of stories and his intelligence is more evident with the very beginning scene of the film itself.
The story takes place at the backdrops of two different periods in 1960 and in present 2005. On the period of 1960, the story centers on Chidambaram, a great business tycoon entering into nuptials with Chitra (Navya Nair). However, with immediate cuts of editing, we see that he kills his wife doubting about her relationship with Chidambaram’s friend Mahadevan (Vineeth), a famous playback singer of that time.
Straightway to present situation, Anjali (Navya Nair) very often gets disturbed by random nightmares and she is said to have been deeply affected by losing her closer ones in Tsunami. Getting admitted at a nursing care home in hill station, a nun takes care of her, but is not able to get anything about her lost identity. Now, she takes the help of Joe ( Vincent Ashokan) trying to get her back to the normal condition.
On this course, a psychiatrist (Raghuvaran) arrives and introduces himself to Joe as a great hypnotist and he will be useful in getting back her memories of past life. Now Anjali gets to know that it was Joe in his earlier life had killed her. But this isn’t the truth and there is something more hidden. Joe along with his friend (Ramesh Khanna) set on to find the truth about the murder Chidambaram had committed and sooner they have some truth that will let them freeze in extreme shock…
As mentioned earlier, Jayaraj does a good and decent job in carefully handling his screenplay and he has presented it with the taste of his audiences of Mollywood. He should have bit more analyzed on the tastes of the audiences of Kollywood and then presented it. Anyways, his ability to make a movie adding no unwanted commercial items makes him appreciable. However, the script does carry some blatant flaws that lets us completely puzzled and this is the major drawback for the film. It would have been better, if there were no songs for only one song looks pleasant on the scenario. Well, all the songs have been picturized with more efficiency, but you will feel is this necessary for a suspense thriller feature of 120mins. Vincent Ashokan coiffures with a stupendous performance with his ability to emote in any situations and Navya Nair shares the same features. However, she does overact in few scenes, especially for the song where she dances along with Vineeth.
Vineeth comes up with a decent effort and indeed does a splendid performance though appearing in minor role. His performance as aged man with throat cancer is really a limelight for the show. Raghuvaran after a long time has done a full-fledged role and he is off the same mark. There is something with a great flaw seen on his characterization and nothing to blame on his part, for the director had to take a note on that.
Valuating the film on a whole, Sila Nerangalil is a relief to class audiences who were seeking for a different genre. Though filled with some blemishes, the other aspects does make the film look perfect…
