Thotta – Misses the target

thotta.jpgAlas! One thing that you’ll feel after watching Thotta is ‘Oh my God, when will Tamil cinema put end to worst films of gangsters?’ Few films attempting to add new dimensions to Kollywood and films like Thota work on contrary perceptions. Duo combo Selva-Jeevan delivered a stupendous one with their previous venture Naan Avanillai. But this flick dashes all your hopes.

The film revolves around Shanmugham aka Thota whose early life is struck with mishaps as his mother dies after being abandoned by her husband. With none to plump for, a police officer adopts Shanmugham and for a great wonder, he turns into a bully gangster and extortionist.

Well, how does he get in with Nalina (Priyamani), his ladylove? A wispy cliché of encounters lets them meet. Thotta is paid to splash acid on Nalina’s face, but he remembers of her financial aid rendered to perform his mother’s funeral rites. Situations glue them together leading to love affair and now Thotta has no aims other than fulfilling Nalina’s dreams becoming a police officer.

Being self-urged on getting her dreams come true, he agrees to bump off a union minister for which in return the job gets fixed for Nalina. It happens to be a critical situation for Thota when police commissioner who raised him ravens for an intercourse with Nalina.

It’s a predictable climax to polish off the antagonist and join hands with his dulcinea…

Jeevan comes up with exquisite performance in action scenes much similar to his prior flicks Kaakha Kaakha and Naan Avanillai, but he scores zero when it comes to romantic sequences for passion lacks a lot. Why does Priyamani accept with such kind roles? Appearing in glamorous outfits seems to be her only notion and her characterization is poorly developed.

Baddies in the film will surely make you laugh. Mayilsaamy, Livingstone gets us annoyed with their yelling dialogues will make one run apart.

Looks more puzzled why Selvah should get stuck with a withering script and an obtuse screenplay. If his previous film had leaped with success, well it was his powerfully crafted screenplay and characterizations. Thotta lacks both getting unfavorable results.

Getting on with technical crew, they get you the worst and imperfect part. Oops! Nothing is more risky than sitting near speakers of cinema hall, listening to shrieking musical score by Srikanth Deva. His background scoring adds an spoiling factor and the songs too. You have nothing impressive from either cinematography or editing.

Beating the same bush doesn’t decide of film’s success and failure, but the very way of shaping it has the result. Thotta breaking up the expectations fails to hit bull’s eyes..
