Krazzy 4 - Hindi Movie Review

April - 18 - 2008

First things first. Thank you Mr Rakesh Roshan for including Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan’s promotional videos in Krazzy 4. The Break Free track helps the film ‘break free’ of its shoddy production values and dull screenplay. These videos are like a shot of adrenalin for both the film and the paying public. But this week’s new release Krazzy 4 is a film made with noble intentions.

Who are the Krazzy 4?

Bollywood has suddenly taken a liking to mental disorders. If U Me Aur Hum deals with Alzheimers and Schizophrenia, the characters in Krazzy 4 suffer from a variety of personality disorders. The movie tells the story of four patients living in a mental asylum.

Raja (Arshad Warsi) can’t seem to control his anger and gets violent at the smallest of provocation.

Dr Mukherjee (Irrfan Khan) is a man who is obsessed with cleanliness and goes about wiping any stain he spots – even Rakhi Sawant’s tattoo. But it is never quite clear why this habit brings him to the asylum.

Gangadhar (Rajpal Yadav) is a man who lives in 1947 and keeps looking for Mahatama Gandhi.

And finally there is Dabboo (Suresh Menon), who suffers from autism and opens his mouth only to eat.

What’s so Krazzy about the film?

On Independence Day these four men get the chance to spend a day in the outside world and go watch a cricket match. But on the way to the stadium, their supervising doctor (Juhi Chawla) gets kidnapped. Stranded in Mumbai city, the four men set off on a mission to rescue their doctor. And in doing so they manage to expose an ugly scam involving top cops and politicians. They take the help of a television anchor (Dia Mirza) who turns out be Raja’s sweetheart – That takes care of the film’s romantic track as well. In the end these so called ‘mad men’ teach the society a lesson or two about honesty and integrity.

It’s a satire with a message:

In the first half, director Jaideep Sen gives the film a Hrishikesh Mukherjee/Rajkumar Hirani style treatment. He establishes his characters’ innocence through a variety of slice-of-life situations. There are a couple of Munnabhai moments in the film. Like that chase in the mall, where nobody except for these four men stops for the National Anthem. Or the sequence where Rajpal Yadav corrects an upside down tricolour at a Government hospital. Through Rajpal’s character, the director touches upon many issues such as civic sense, corruption and patriotism. Sen shows his flair for simple situational comedy in these scenes.

The slapstick second half:

Krazzy 4 would have worked well had it continued to be a social satire. But somewhere in the second half, the director chooses the Priyadarshan route of slapstick humour. So out goes the subtlety and you have a dozen buffoons falling over each other. By the end of it all you are just thankful that it is all over.

Acting talent wasted:

Arshad, Irrfan, Rajpal and Suresh are pros at comedy. But the director fails to create any chemistry between them. So while each actor does his own bit using with distinct mannerisms, their interactions fall flat. Instead of showing confusion between the four characters, one gets the sense of watching four standup comedians. The four call themselves a ‘team’ in the film. But sadly they don’t perform like one.

The movie might be called Krazzy 4, but Suresh Menon is completely sidelined with Irrfan, Arshad and Rajpal doing all the talking. Arshad and Rajpal do their parts well but Irrfan looks bored, as his brand of witty humour is underutilised. As for Juhi, Dia, Zakir Hussain and Rajat Kapoor, they look like the only reason they’re in the film is to get into the good books of Filmkraft.

Rajesh Roshan’s below average music:

Save for the title track, the soundtrack is a big bore. Even Rakhi Sawant’s item number turns out to be a damp squib. Technically the film sports a dull look. Smart packaging has worked for many comedies in recent times. Krazzy 4 however has little in terms of face value except for the overplayed music videos. But here the entire film has been shot between Bandra and Andheri and lacks the gloss that one would expect from a Roshan production.

Cast & Crew:

Banner: Filmkraft Productions (I) Pvt Ltd
Cast: Arshad Warsi, Irrfan Khan, Dia Mirza, Rajpal Yadav, Suresh Menon, Rajat Kapoor, Zakir Hussain, Juhi Chawla
Direction: Jaideep Sen
Production: Rakesh Roshan, Sunaina Roshan

Verdict:
Krazzy 4 deserves kudos for steering clear of any vulgarity. Some of the jokes might appeal to a section of the audience bred on Laughter Challenge shows. But overall, this 120-minute-long film is low on entertainment as the laughs are few and far between. Krazzy 4 ends with a ‘To Be Continued’ scroll, which means there is already a sequel in the pipeline. Better luck next time guys.
