Kalidas - Telugu Movie Review

April - 19 - 2008

Acting just can’t be learnt, it should be in the blood. Sushant is one such hero, whose grandfather Akkineni Nageswara Rao is a veteran artiste, while his maternal uncle Nagarjuna is also a star in Tollywood and his cousin brother Sumanth also proved a good artiste in Telugu film industry. Sushant was in the US for quite some time and later returned to India with a passion towards the films and acting. In order to promote him as hero, Annapurna Studios decides to remain a presenter, while his mother A Naga Suseela and Ch Srinivasa Rao turned producers to make the film on the banner of Sri Nag Corporation. Ravicharan Reddy also made his debut as director and conceptualized the story scripted by one of the producers Ch Srinivasa Rao. While the first half was chosen to boost the image of the hero, the second half was devoted to highlight the mind game of the director.

Kalidas (Sushant), who was an orphan, was brought up by a florist Kanakadurga (Jayasudha), who vends flowers and fruits near a temple. Kalidas did never pay attention towards education, instead he gets ready to do anything to help Kanakaduga and her son Jayadev. He turns a car-lifter to provide good education to Jayadev in Hyderabad. Baba (Tanikella Bharani) and his son Basha (Sunil) support Kalidas by buying the cars brought by Kalidas. In the college, Jayadev befriends with Archana (Tamanna), who runs a college that collects nominal fee to provide education to poor students. A minister (Rajan P Dev) eyes the land of the college and tells his close follower Pratap (Vinodkumar) to get the land by hook or crook. Incidentally Pratap and his brother were the trustees of the college. In order to get the land transfer legally, Pratap decides to get Archana married to his brother-in-law Ajay (Ajay) to bequeath the property. Archana escapes before marriage and hides in a car. Kalidas, who visits Hyderabad, returns to Guntur, by stealing the car in which Archana was hiding. In order to protect herself, Archana changes her name to Mirchi and acts like a mad girl. However, Kalidas strongly believe that she was just acting, but could not prove. At this juncture, Pratap taps the phone from Archana with the help of police and goes to Guntur. Pratap and his men kidnap Archana by killing Basha. Noticing the photograph of Dev with Archana in her mobile, Kalidas goes to the college where Dev was studying and learns that he was killed by Pratap and also about his crooked plans to encroach the college land. How, Kalidas saved Archana? How he took revenge against Pratap, Ajay and others? How he saved the college from the land encroachers? Answers to all these questions form part of the climax.

Though this is the debut film for Sushant, he showed good ease and flexibility in dances. As the director chose to portray his character to suit the taste of mass audiences, the action scenes were also choreographed in a special way for the hero. However, he needs to improve a lot in his body language and in performance. He also needs to improve his glamour to stay in the film industry. In some scenes and in some angles he looked like Tarakaratna. When it comes to Tamanna, she is gorgeous in modern costumes. The director succeeded in show her in a romantic way in the songs. The costumes designed for her also showed the taste of the director and producers. Vinodkumar, after a long gap appeared in a key role with a negative shade. Vinodkumar, Rajan P Dev and Ajay did justice to their respective roles. Jayasudha’s character had the similarities of her character in ‘Style’. She is at her best in performance. Comedy by Sunil, Raghubabu and others is adequate.

Music by Chakri is average. A couple of songs were tuned excellently and the lyric on ‘thefts’ was penned excellently. Another song ‘Panchadara Yedarilo…’ is also lilting. Camera work by Akhilan is good in songs and action scenes. He was able to capture the beauty of foreign locales and the beaches in abroad. Action scenes by Kanal Kannal though appeared stylish, there is a lot of thread work which made them to get an artificial look. Dialogues by Rajasimha are good in parts.

Being a boy from artistes family, it appeared that he had good touch with the films as he showed very good ease in dance and action scenes. In order to further his career, he should improve his glamour and body language. Tamanna proved her acting talents and at the same time looked gorgeous. A promising career awaits her in Tollywood. Surekhavani played a negative role for the first time. As a whole the film remained a good platform for a debutant.
