Times of India’s cheap behaviour

April - 21 - 2008

Times of India, born as a new tabloid on April, 14 2008 wanted to do something big to attract more number of audience, which ended up in a promotion by AR Rahman - A Live concert by Music Wizard AR Rahman on 20 April, 2008 at George Ground, Chennai.

The tabloid issued 50,000 free passes for the concert and the passes had the rules and regulations mentioning, the concert starts from 6:30 PM and the doors will be opened by 6:00 PM.

But the scenario that has happened on the spot is something different. The doors were opened by 4:00 PM and closed by 6:00 PM. Poor people who reached the spot by 6:00 PM after crossing heavy traffic were disappointed. Around 20,000 people were waiting near the gate in an expectation that they would be sent in. This ended up in heavy traffic and by 7:00 PM, the cops started harassing and chased the crowd brutally. Its really pity to watch the scene. Even some families were harassed by the cops, which is really unfair. Its not the poor fans mistake.

The mistake lies completely on Times of India, who organized this promotional event. They should have planned well before organizing an event like this. Being a big group of company, can’t they arrange for a larger space, where 50,000 people can occupy. If they want only 30,000 people, why did they give 50,000 passes?

Some die-hard fans of Rahman jumped the backyard walls and tried to get into the show. But even they were disappointed. Though there was enough space left, fans were chased by the cops in a harsh manner. The scene was really horrible. No organization will behave so cheap in chasing the fans this way. None of the representatives of Times of India were bothered to apologise for this cause. But they simply said “We cannot permit now. Get away.” and also forced the cops to chase the crowd.

Not only from chennai, people from different corners of india came to the concert and was disappointed. Disappointment is something secondary, But none were treated like human-being.

Rahman, who was not aware of this incident was very happy seeing the big crowd inside. Little it was known to him, that his fans were treated like dogs by the Times of India Guards and cops, sure Rahman would have stopped the show.

Times of India should know that “they are nothing without the public” and should learn to respect public. Else they cannot survive in this competitive market.

All we can say is, Times of India did something big and spoiled their name themselves. From this its cleary understood, one should not rely on any advertisements and banners. Its all a cheat. Only the company which advertises gain popularity and the public are cheated.

A GOOD LESSON TO PUBLIC by TIMES OF INDIA
