Parugu – Telugu Movie Review

May - 14 - 2008

Krishna (Allu Arjun) used to teach skating. He supports his friend Babu to elope with his girlfriend Subbalakshmi (Poonam Bajwa), the elder daughter of Neelakantam (Prakashraj), a village elder. Irked over this, Neelakantam and his kin hole up Krishna and his friends to enquire about Babu. While Neelakantam, his brother (Subbaraju) and his brother-in-laws are in search of Subbalakshmi, Krishna loses his heart to Meenakshi (Sheela), the younger daughter of Neelakantam. Though hesitant in the beginning, Meenakshi succumbs to the proposal made by Krishna a little later, but it was too late. Neelakanta presumes that his second daughter would not commit the same mistake done by her sister. So, he broaches an alliance and arranges a marriage to her. Now it is the turn of Krishna to react. Will Krishna sacrifice his love? What step did Meenakshi take? Did she elope or stay back with her parents respecting them? Did Neelakanta understands the love between Meenakshi and Arjun? Answers to all these questions are to be seen on the silver screen.

Allu Arjun gave a brilliant performance and showed extreme energy and powerful performance all through the film. He performed better than his earlier films. The way he expressed his emotions and feelings in the film explain his maturity in performance. Especially, in the climax, when he encounters with Prakash Raj and venting his feelings to him, he showed extreme ease in performance. The audiences would definitely appreciate Allu Arjun in sporting a different look in each of his films. Earlier, in Desamuduru, he built a six-pack body. Immediately, in the latest film, he shed his weight and appeared as a normal young man. Sheela’s role was moulded in an innocent and traditional way. She is just okay in her role. She showed good ease in song sequences and a little more better make-up would have enhanced her beauty. She had not much scope to perform.

Prakashraj once again proved that he is a great artiste and this time, he played the role of a father of two daughters. His emotions in explaining the struggles faced by a father at the end of the movie would be a major asset for the film. Once again, the director moulded his role in an extra-ordinary manner. The role in this film would remain his career-best. Jayasudha played the mother of Allu Arjun and she is adequate, though she appeared in a couple of scenes. Comedy by Sunil, Srinivasa Reddy, Dhanaraj and Chitram Srinu is okay. Poonam Bajwa is adequate in her role, while Subbaraju did justice to his role.

Director Bhaskar tried his best to explain the relationship between father and daughters and how much love a father could afford to his daughters. He was able to portray the struggle faced by a father, especially after bringing up his daughter for 22 years, if she elopes with her boyfriend. This is the basic storyline of the movie. The director, inadvertently made some mistakes in the script. Prakash Raj did his role with much eloquence. The dialogues in the film by BVS Ravi are not much inspiring. However, camera work by Vijay is adequate. Editing is quite normal. Manisharma’s music in scoring audio as well as re-recording is not really up to his standard. Action episodes are also not very striking.

The entire first half was filled with entertainment though there is no gripping story. The second half begins with a good feel but it slowly came down and after a couple of boring scenes, the director picks up his grip on the film and gave a good end in the climax. The film really failed to reach the expectations of audiences especially when the director, producer and hero were already proved successful. If one goes without any expectations it is an average film for him. The performance of Allu Arjun and Prakashraj would remain assets and pillars of the film. Some slippery scenes in the screenplay really spoiled the mood of the film. The director failed to give a straight message to the audience which was in his mind. As a whole the film is a good family entertainer.
