Dasavatharam - Tamil Movie Review

Dasavatharam – New Avatar of Tamil Cinema

Prodigious flick raising each and everyone’s adrenaline has finally hit the screens thus marking a great milestone in the history of Tamil Cinema. Of course, performing 10 roles reveals of the breathtaking hard work by Kamal Haasan, but Director K.S.Ravikumar takes plighting fleet in well executing the scenes involving all these characters. Imagine, four different characters encountering each other at same time and that is something will make you render grand round of applause from beginning till the end.

Placed at different eras of 12th and 21st Century, A God’s statue plays a crucial role equivalently of Kamal Haasan. Obviously, don’t forget the terrible Tsunami that happens to be another central theme in this flick.

The prologue has Govindrajan (Kamal Haasan), a scientist in NASA addressing a huge crowd where Chief Minister Karunanidhi, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and American President George Bush are guests of honors. In his speech, he has something important to say about a statue that has a great past history and you fleeted back to 12th Century.

Raja Kulothunga of 12th Century orders to demolish a God’s statue and wants the people to worship the God of his own community. On the course of removing the statue, King’s men are severely injured by Nambi Rajan (Kamal Haasan) who is a staunch believer of Narayana. Unbearable and frustrated King has Nambi tied to the statue and then thrown into the enraged sea.

Forthwith in narration, the story shifts to 21st Century at NASA where Govinda Rajan aka Govind excogitates a biological weapon on December 20, 2004. But sooner, there are gangs to snatch and supply it to the terrorists in the world so that the entire human race may get deteriorated. Aware of the situation, the biological weapon is grabbed by Govindarajan and by course of perplexities; it reaches Mandaveli in Chennai through courier.

On the heels of getting it into their hands, an American Hit Man and former CIA agent (again played by Kamal Haasan) is hired to bump of Govindarajan and snaffle up the biological weapon. Meanwhile, we have CBI officer Naidu (Kamal Haasan) is appointed to stop the baddies and their evil deeds.

Rest of the story is an embodiment of roller-coaster ride of spine-chilling thriller where all the characters played by Kamal Haasan are brought in together by Tsunami and a statue.

American President George Bush, An ex- CIA agent, Avtar Singh – a pop singer, 110-year old granny who is bit depressed, A tall innocent Muslim, Staunch Nambi Rajan of 12th Century, CBI Naidu, Poovagam – An youngster from Dalit Community, Govind Rajan – A scientist and Japanese Martial Arts expert. Imagine, the combo of these characters of different attributes together on the screen for 3 hours and it is really mind blowing.

Though, each of the characters has been stunningly presented with makeovers and gestures, there are few characters that grasps your attention. Performance by Kamal Haasan on the role of Raja Nambi is really dazzling. Well, on the lines of delivering social message you have Poovagam of Dalit Community excelling is enunciating dialogues with Nellai slang.

Then for the action part, Martial Arts trainer and American Hit Man will move audiences to edge of their seats. But the most heart binding emotional sequence about communal integrity (Brahmin and Dalit) will make you clap and shed bit of tears. As off laughter, you have CBI Naidu who has rib-trickling comedic stuffs for all. Coming up with dual roles, Asin does a decent job on her part, but overdoes in dubbing and that doesn’t do good.

Crafting a phenomenal script and blending a fictional theory on ‘Other Side of Tsunami’ is a piece of marvelous deliverance from Kamal Haasan. Dialogues are more precise in all situations. Be it comedy or serious situations, Kamal Haasan’s work is there with it. Especially dialogues centering on George Bush reveals of his real life character and we are if he is gonna watch it, he will get enraged with Kamal Haasan. Dialogues between Japanese Martial master and American during climax are highlighting notch-marks. “Have you forgotten Hiroshima?” says American Hit Man and in turn Japanese guy with counter “Have you forgotten about what happened to Pearl Harbor?” there are really appealing and that’s an auteur’s cut of excellence.

All the songs have been canned well and KS Ravikumar has framed them in such a way that it moves along with the story. He makes it sure that none of the audiences go out to take a puff. Himesh Reshamiya’s take on ‘Oh Oh Sanam’ is good for the ears and so does the lyrical lines. Devi Sri Prasad does a commendable job with his background scoring and it enhances the visual quality.

Computer Generated Graphics are more enough to surprise the audience and its an incredible task of picturing 4-5characters played by Kamal at the same time. There are no possibilities finding out flaws in them. Ravi Varman scrolls the lens here and there. They are really captivating but upto some extent and at many points its more disgusting to see the same camera movements.

Summing up, Kamal Haasan rules the screen and there is nothing more you have got to appreciate other than him. A great movie with an exceptional storyline has it all in taking Tamil Cinema to the next level in the series of World Cinema.

I feel the movie is just average. I think ten characters are not necessary in the movie. Just for the heck of doing 10 characters, kamal has done it. No link between the ten characters. moreover i suspect was all those characters really done by kamal? Because, fletcher and bush looks so lean and kamal is fat. its not beleivable. and the japanese man also looks different. i think all ten are not kamal. and its a disappointment for kamal fans.

  5. Parvathi Said,

All the ten characters are well stitched. I got carried away on three characters especially: 1) Fletcher - What an awsome accent and mannerism. He steals the show. 2) Bush - Perfect as Bush in all means. 3) CBI Naidu (Balram Naidu) - Funny Man. Good comic sense.

  30. Kamal Fan Said,

You stupid santosh. Whatz wrong with you? r u gone nuts? Dasavatharam is the best movie of indian cinema. But u say its just average. I think ur taste is so cheap. Might be you encourage only masala movies like kuruvi. If your class is so cheap, better stay away from rich films like dasavatharam. don’t simply post wrong and stupid comment in sites.

  31. santosh Said,

i feel the movie is just average. nothing much to praise the movie. what is the necessity for kamal to act in 10 roles. actually that is not required for the subject. any x y z could have done the other 9 roles. just to break the record of sivaji ganesan kamal has done this attempt. he has done his part well. but still i feel there is nothing to praise the movie like this. i really dont know why everybody are just raving about the movie. whatz so special in the movie? its full of graphics. overall kamal has worked hard. thatz it. the makeup of few characters are really poor. few makeups like, tall man and old lady, its very artificial. the makeup is like a toon. its not natural. i feel its really unwanted to spend so much on the movie. its a normal story. and it can also be done by a single role of kamal. anywayz can watch the movie once

  34. Shankar Guru Said,

Earlier only sivaji was the biggest movie in kollywood which gave good business over the globe. Now dasavatharam breaks sivaji record. I feel dasavatharam is very very very very very very very very good. Sivaji was just a commercial flick. But dasavatharam is high beyond the expectation. The hard work has given the team a good result. letz hope more movies like this in future. All local and commercial directors, please watch this movie and learn to give a good movie. dont take movie just for the heck of taking it. give us worthy movies like dasavatharam.
