Will Rani and Saif succeed?

June - 24 - 2008

A hit film and a dud later, Rani Mukherjee and Saif Ali Khan hope to revive their box-office magic with this week’s release Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic .

Four years ago, Saif and Rani won many a heart with their successful jodi in the Kunal Kohli-directed film Hum Tum . The movie, a love story of two incompatible people, was a money-spinner at the box-office and it was also the first hit film with Saif as a solo hero. Overnight, the film catapulted Saif into the higher league, thereby making fiercer the competition among the Khans in Bollywood.

Last year, director Siddharth Anand cast Rani-Saif in his Tara Rum Pum that had the two stars playing a married couple going through crises in life. Unexpectedly, the movie was a flop. But it failed not because of Saif or Rani but because director Siddharth Anand did not do his job well and focused more on ripping off scenes from Hollywood and Italian films.

Now, Kunal Kohli is trying to replicate the success of ‘Hum Tum’ by teaming Saif and Rani once again in his ‘Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic’. The movie has Saif playing a business executive and Rani playing a fairy who comes from heaven to take care of four loveless orphans living with Saif.

Rani, whose past few releases like Laaga Chunari Mein Daag and Saawariya turned out to be turkeys at the marquee, is very optimistic that ‘TPTM’ will be lapped by the audience.

The actress says there are three reasons for her optimism – “the film’s story, Kunal Kohli, and my chemistry with Saif.”

Rani believes the subject of TPTM is very novel and has a strong emotive appeal. Secondly, the actress believes Kunal has “matured as a director” since his ‘Hum Tum’ days. Thirdly, Rani believes, Saif “brings out the best in me”.

Interestingly, Rani and Saif didn’t get along very well during the making of ‘Hum Tum’. It was during the shooting of ‘Tara Rum Pum’ that they became good friends. Now, this chemistry has been carried forward in TPTM.
