Sakkarakatti - Tamil Music Review

July - 13 - 2008

After many postpones, the audio of Sakkarakatti has finally hit the markets on July 11, 2008. Shanthanu and Vedhika shares the main screenspace, directed by Kalapraboo and produced by his father Kalaipuli S Thanu. Music Wizard AR Rahman has composed 6 peppy numbers for this album.

Here we go with the Music Review:

1) Chinnamma Chilakkamma – This is a tamil version of Chinnamma Chilakkamma from Meenaxi - Tale of 3 Cities(Hindi), composed by AR Rahman. The song was a huge hit and won many accolades for AR Rahman on 2004. Director Kalapraboo inspired by this song has requested AR Rahman to compose the tamil version. Benny Dayal of Azhagiya Thamizh Magan fame and Chinmayi have rendered their voice for this peppy classical folk. The song starts off with brilliant flute followed by a chorus “Chinamma Chilakkamma” and background percussions adorn the song more perfect. The song has the taste of classic, western & folk and its sure to rock. If its picturised well, the song might do wonders. Its of Chaiya Chaiya(Dilse) style, but more ravishing.

Rating: 9.5/10

2) Elay Neram - One can easily figure out the traces of ‘Roobaroo’ from Bollywood blockbuster Rang De Basanti(Composed by AR Rahman), but its presented with difference and elegance. The usage of Violin and Guitars with the peppy voices of Krish and Naresh Iyer makes the song more beautiful. This is sure a song for youths.

Rating: 9.4/10

3) I Miss You Da - Chinmayi and Indai Haza sings in a erotic and sensuous tone that fits perfectly with the situation of the song. Rahman’s magic in usage of multi layered background instruments make the song awesome. Seems to be a situational song, hopefully it should be picturised well.

Rating: 9.4/10

4) Marudhani - The initial hum of the song, reminds us a bit of ‘Sahana Saaral’ from the blockbuster Sivaji. Madhushree, has put in lot of effort to pronounce tamil perfectly and she does a neat job in rendering a beautiful melody with soothing western beats. AR Rahman’s vocal for a few seconds as an interlude adds more spice. But Rahman fans might get disappointed to listen only few seconds of Rahman’s vocal. If well presented on screen, sure song will go bizarre.

Rating: 9.5/10

5) Naan Epodhu - Another number lifted from Meenaxi - Tale of 3 Cities(Hindi) as per director’s request, with the same singer Reena Bharadwaj. Its a refreshing classical melody from Rahman like ‘Kannodu Kanbathelam’ from Jeans and ‘Nenjinilae’ from Uyire. The song is sure to capture all the classical lovers.

Rating: 9.3/10

6) Taxi Taxi - This is the perfect Rahman kinda hip-hop, all music lovers expect. This number is sure to be the major hit of the album. The typical youth chartbuster that should be heard all over Chennai in a few days of time. It’s a song based on Friendship like ‘Mustafa’ from Kadhal Dhesam, but presented in a hip-hop style. Rahman is back with the Boys feel, and music lovers are gonna just love it! The song has the perfect flow to it for a peppy number and different variations have been tried by ARR, which works out wonderfully well. Catchy lyric ‘Shaba, Balle Balle’ adds more energy to the song, which will make it an anthem for youths very soon. One cannot stop dancing in theatres for this song.

Rating: 9.8/10

On a nutshell, Rahman is back with a bang after Azhagiya Thamizhmagan to capture the hearts of music lovers. The album has a mixture of genres like Classic, Folk, Melody and Hip-Hop. As we all know, Rahman’s music is always a slow-poison. It slowly attracts the people and very soon, the album will be a massive hit. Rahman has again proved his calibre with the stylish album “Sakkarakatti”. You can listen to the samples above. But don’t forget to buy the Audio CD.

Overall Rating: Four Stars
