Hare Ram – Telugu Movie Review

July - 31 - 2008

It is just a surprise when Kalyanram’s home production ‘Athanokkade’ on his own banner NTR Arts was a blockbuster, because two of his earlier films like ‘Abhimanyu and ‘Tolichoopulone’ were miserable flops. Again two more films in which he worked for others’ banners like ‘Asadhyudu’ and ‘Lakshmi Kalyanam’ also turned failures. Now his latest flick ‘Hare Ram’ which came out from his home production earned a near hit talk from the first show. The film had lots of commercial values, stylish action scenes and dances with fast movements. Debutant director Harshavardhan was able to entertain the mass audiences with a gripping subject, though it had the scent of a dubbed film ‘Manmadha’ with Simbu as hero.

Hari (Kalyanram) is an IPS officer who was brought up by his paternal uncle and aunt (Chalapati Rao and Sudha). Anjali (Priyamani) who joins a bank as recovery officer wants to take the help of a tough police officer to recover the bad debts. In order to take his help, Anjali plans to trap him in the name of love. But Hari proves that he is really a tough nut to crack. At this juncture, there were two mysterious murders of a journalist (Prabhakar) and a scientist (Rajiv Kanakala). The police remain clueless about the murders. But, a taxi driver (Brahmanandam) tells the police and a minister (Kota Srinivasa Rao), who was the brother of dead scientist that he had seen the killer Ram (Kalyanram), who was a look alike of Hari. The minister suspects that Hari was shielding Ram and gets him suspended. At this juncture, Anjali pretends that she was in murder phobia and attempt suicide twice. This forces Hari to confess that he was the killer of the journo and the scientist. Immediately, Anjali reveals her identity that she was a CBI officer, appointed to unravel the murder mystery and arrests Hari. But, the minister suspects that Hari was pretending that he was a killer only to save Ram from shoot-at-sight orders. At this juncture, Anjali meets Ram’s mother and realises that Ram is there and she mistakenly arrested Hari. To find out the truth, she takes Hari to lie-detector test, where he reveals that he pretended only to save his brother. Now Anjali decides to let him off the case. But the fact is that it was Hari who really killed those two. Why Hari and Ram got separated? What is the mental condition of Ram? Why Hari killed those two? What happened to Ram? Is Hari really had any vengeance towards the villains? Answers to all these questions form part of the remaining part of the film.

Kalyanram did a lot of homework to make the film a big hit. He showed excellent performance in both the characters. He showed good variation between both the characters. Right from the make up to the walking style, mannerisms and everything, he showed perfect variation between both the characters. His histrionics in Ram characters are really wonderful, while he looked glamorous as police officer. Priyamani also appeared gorgeous in various scenes. Her character had lot of chirpiness in the beginning and turns serious after a couple of scenes, when she reveals her identity as CBI officer. She utilised the opportunity to perform in a nice role. Sindhu Tulani, though had a brief role to play in the flashback did well. Chalapati Rao, Chandramohan, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Ashokkumar, Sudha and Sita did complete justice to their respective roles, while comedy by Ali, Brahmanandam and Raghubabu is adequate. Venumadhav failed to bring at least smile with his role.

There is not much to talk about the technical aspects. The director rehashed the story of Manmadha in a novel way. However, the gripping screenplay and the nail-baiting movement in the first half made the audiences anxiously wait what would happen in the second half. However, the director failed to maintain the tempo in the second half. It went dull for an adequate time, but he was able to recover in the climax to certain extent. Camera work by Ramprasad is good in action scenes and dances. Action by Selva and Ram-Lakshman are stylish, while editing by Gautham Raju is tight and okay.

Though the film has all the mass masala elements that could attract the mass audiences, the sentiment scenes are not so gripping. The success of the film in cities is doubtful while it might do well in B, C centres. As was said earlier, it appears that Kalyanram would strive hard in his home production with a firm commitment to make it a blockbuster.
