Dhanam – Drenched with old theme
Those unfamiliar with debutant director Siva, he is the one favorite protégé of veteran ace director K.Balachandar. K.Balachandar’s flicks are more ambitious cinematic statements and Siva follows on the same foot paths. Dhanam, on the best terms can be termed as the ambitious cinematic statements suiting to the art-cinema crowd, but the story convey genuine emotions in a larger social context. A woman, involved in flesh trade as a sex-worker for helping poor people in her ambience is all Dhanam speaks about. She fighting for Liberty, equality and fraternity in the male dominated society has been precisely depicted…
Dhanam doesn’t make more sense either with its theme or narration for we have seen K.Balachandar’s ‘Arangettram’, before couple of decades carried on the same lines. Can’t understand the fact why Sangeetha always opts for controversial roles? May be her performance was more appealing in Pithamaghan, but then for a worst part, her characterization was sickening in Uyir. The role of sex-worker, again does it sound controversial?
One fine reason for roping in Sangeetha would have been the fact that other heroines refusing to take up this role. So, Kollywood defines keys for the success of actor and actresses in Kollywood. If you are an actor, accept the role of sex-worker or any controversial role (Sangeetha, Ammuvagiya Naan fame Bharathi and Sneha in Pudupettai). And for young lads planning to make it big as actor, grow long and thick beard, pick up with a sharp and long sickle and shoot your entire film at the backdrops of Madurai.
Fine! Let’s not get ourselves dragged out… Tale of Dhanam goes this way…
Set at the backdrops of Hyderabad, Dhanam (Sangeetha) is sex-worker involved in physique trade for one reason: to help poor people at her necks of the woods. Anantharaman (Prem), a youngster belonging to the Orthodox Brahmin Family isn’t just fascinated by her looks, but good nature. Proposing his love and interested in marrying her doesn’t make Dhanam turn assertive. In turn, her only request is that she is ready to marry him with his parent’s consent.
First, not letting their prestige down, Anantharaman’s family members accept Dhanam as their daughter-in-law, when their family astrologer (Kota Srinivasa Rao), a lustful entity by inner self obliges them. He lets off his predicted message that Dhanam getting in would bring fortune and more wealth into their family. Well, the salacious astrologer tries to woo her, but nothing turns to his favor. Meanwhile, Dhanam’s peaceful life is deteriorated as she gives birth to a girl child and she is alienated from the family. With none to rescue her in the troubled pits, she is frustrated and avenges the entire family. Does the law gives out the judgment on the protagonist’s favor and punishes her forms crux of the story.
As mentioned, Sangeetha does nothing new with her performance and it’s the same spell on emoting in erotic sequences as well emotional sequences. Prem as an trembling husband who isn’t sure about his advocacy perfectly suits the role. Girish Karnad, Ashish Vidyarthy, Manobala, Rajalakshmi and others brim up, doing justice to their roles.
Maestro Ilayaraja’s musical score isn’t so impressing except couple of songs while the background score is enchanting. Scintillating cinematography by Jeeva marks off as an fantabulous piece of work
On the whole, Dhanam is a flick that is sure to win laurels for Sangeetha and nothing more to appreciate about it. The film would have extraordinarily done well if it had hit the screens before 25 years…
