Baladoor – Telugu Movie Review

September - 10 - 2008

Chanti (Raviteja), who loses his mother in his childhood was brought up by his paternal uncle (pedananna) Ramakrishna (Krishna). Chanti’s father Purushottam (Chandramohan) did not marry again and continues to serve his brother. Ramakrishna loves Chanti and used to pamper him though the latter gets chiding from Purushottam. Chanti used to quarrel with anyone who does injustice the society in general and who disregards woman and his paternal uncle. Umapati (Pradeep Rawat), who is also doing real estate business like Ramakrishna and his brother, is a bitter foe to them and he used to make several attempts to hit his business but fails every time. When Ramakrishna and his family go to their native village, Chanti meets Bhanumati (Anushka) accidentally. When Umapati’s brother challenges Ramakrishna, Chanti thrashes him and Bhanumati after watching Chanti’s guts loses her heart. In order to help his sister-in-law, who is being blackmailed by Umapati’s son, Chanti thrashes him and Umapati’s brother-in-law (Subbaraju) attacks Ramakrishna’s house. So, Chanti gives a sound thrashing to him as well. But this occurs on the day when the engagement of Ramakrishna’s daughter was about to be done and the function as well as the alliance gets spoiled. So Purushottam necks Chanti out of house. Later, Purushottam dies of heart attack. In a bid to defame Ramakrishna, Umapati tries to get his project seized by managing a minister, who creates fictitious documents saying that the land belongs to endowments department. But Chanti involves in the deal and gets the issue settled in Ramakrishna’s favour. Likewise, Chanti pleads with the family of his sister’s would-be and gets her marriage performed. As a last resort, Umapati calls goons and bomb one of the buildings built by Ramakrishna and several labourers die in the incident. When police were supposed to arrest Ramakrishna, Chanti appears suddenly claiming that he only blasted the building and gets arrested. Did Chanti was able to come out of the case? How Chanti taught a lesson to Umapati and his gang had to be seen on the screen.

Raviteja is at his usual best in this film. With the story and the scenes are just tailor-made for Raviteja, he did not face any difficulty. Moreover, there was no need for a change in his body language. Especially, he maintained perfect comedy timing and the film has Raviteja style of comedy in the first half. The second half was almost devoted to action scenes. Though the action scenes are not so energetic like his earlier films, they are okay for his fans. Anushka has not much role to play. Moreover, she went a little overboard in some scenes. She devoted most of the time for exposing her glamour. But for shaking legs in songs and unveiling her beauty, there is nothing in her character. After a long time, Krishna appeared on the screen and he lived up to the expectations of the audiences. He is very good as a character artiste. Once again the script writers failed to pen good scenes involving Brahmanandam. The director, failed to utilise his services in a worthy manner, especially from a senior comedian and Guinness Record holder, in the absence of good script. Comedy by Sunil also failed to tickle the funny bone of the audiences. Others like Chandramohan, Sameer, Raja Ravindra and Raviprakash are okay in their roles. Pradeep Rawat and Subbaraju showed their routine villainy.

The screenplay was slipshod and the director is unable to direct a mass hero like Raviteja. Though director Udayshankar had a history of giving a big hit like ‘Kalisundam Raa…’ on the banner, he could not give any notable film after that. Once again, he failed to deliver good for the banner. Radhakrishnan who gave nice music for ‘Happy Days’, could not score good tunes for a mass hero. But for a couple of songs, the other songs gave a respite for the audiences to have a cigarette. The director failed to give a soft movement for the film. While the first half was devoted to comedy, the second half was full of action scenes. Many scenes were abrupt. Camera work by Balamurugan is okay while, the action scenes are not so stylish and so so. The only speciality in the film is the selection of new locations for its backdrop.

The director, instead of going for a good romance between the hero and heroine, chose to highlight the belly button and the waist of the heroine. Whenever Anushka appears on the screen, the audiences noticed a song immediately and were seen moving out to relax. The movement of the film was very slow and it lacked the real punch. Editing by Marthand K Venkatesh should have been a little more sharper. The story has no novelty and the movement of the film gave the audiences a feeling of watching an old commercial entertainer in 80s or 90s. Could be watched once and even if you miss it, that doesn’t matter.
