Souryam – Telugu Movie Review

October - 23 - 2008

Vijay (Gopichand) goes to Kolkata and joins as a student in a college. He teaches a lesson to Swetha (Anushka) when the latter tried to tease him in the name of ragging. Divya (Poonam Kaur) is Swetha’s best friend and Vijay stands behind Divya, when her uncle (Chinnanna) eyes her house. Later, when some goons led by Ajaybabu (Ajay), son of a notorious land mafia don of Hyderabad Sivaram Goud (Manoj K Jayan), try to kidnap Divya, Vijay comes to her rescue again. In the process, Vijay kills Ajaybabu. As Divya gets hurt in the incident, Vijay admits her in hospital and explains to Swetha and her parents (Dharmavarapu & Sudha) that he is none other than her brother. He reveals under what circumstances he had to disown his sister and how he became a police officer despite the fact that he is the son of a gangster. As the police officer (Saratbabu), who brought him up and made him a police dies a hapless death in the hands of Sivaram Goud, Vijay decides to teach Sivaram Goud a lesson and hatches a plan to distribute his entire property to poor. At the end, Vijay plays a trick and get Goud caught in a narcotics case. Vijay used be a fearless cop as he doesn’t have any kith and kin and none could threaten him on sentiment thread. However, Vijay learns that his sister was in Kolkata and goes there to meet her. Incidentally, Sivaram Goud too gets the information and he also sends his son to kidnap Divya to mend Vijay. Now, Sivaram Goud decides to take revenge for his son’s death and successfully kidnap Divya and calls up Vijay to save her. Does he cause harm to Divya? How Vijay saved Divya? Did Divya accept Vijay as her brother by forgiving him? Answers to all these questions form part of climax.

Gopichand gave a superlative performance in action scenes. Having an action hero image with hits like ‘Ranam, Yagnam, Lakshyam and Okkadunnadu’, Gopichand showed a good ease in action scenes. It seems Gopichand too shed lots of weight these days and appeared slim in a couple of scenes. He improved a lot in dance movements too. He tried a couple of variety steps in some songs and succeeded well. The story, being a tailor-made for Gopichand, came out well to suit the taste of mass audiences. Anushka, who paired up with Gopichand for the second time after Lakshyam, once again proved that she was gorgeous. The costume designer, to satiate the mass audiences, designed revealing dresses. However, she did not have much scope for performance. Poonam Kaur is okay as the sister and was seen crying most of the time in scenes filled with sentiment. Ali evoked good comedy after a long time as Gymson, while Malayalam artiste Manoj K Jayan gave a fresh look in performing villainy. Once again Ajay played a stereotype role in the movie. Comedy by Dharmavarapu Subrahmanyam, Raghubabu, Krishna Bhagawan, Sudha is good and all of them did justice to their respective roles.

Being a cinematographer-turned-director, Siva ensured good taking of almost all the scenes. Vetri, who handled the camera perfectly captured the action scenes and songs, by sensing the taste of the director. Editing by Marthand K Venkatesh should have sharpened his scissors further in the second half, especially, the teasing scene of the villain by the hero. It appeared too stretched for the audiences. Though the storyline is good, with a combination of action, sentiment and love, the director, being a first timer could not mix it in a proper way. But he very much succeeded in maintaining the mass elements and it would be a definite commercial hit as the action scenes were shot. The director caught the pulse of B, C Centres audiences, though the film might go average in cities. Once again the director made good use of Anushka’s glamour and the sentiment of Anushka in a boozing scene and the showcasing of waist and belly button was continued in this movie too. Manisharma failed to give catchy tunes for this action-packed drama. Only a couple of songs are okay but the others are not so appealing or foot tapping. Dialogues by M Ratnam are good in parts. However, the punch dialogues before the climax penned for Raghubabu and Krishna Bhagawan, of course also for MS Narayana evoked good laughter. The director should have taken more care while bringing out the movie. Though a part of the film has Kolkata as its backdrop, the artistes continue to speak in Telugu. Likewise, the director who also penned the screenplay, showed slackness and this is easily visible after the interval bang. Had the climax was shot a little more effectively, the film would have been more successful. It is a must watch film for those who love action films and bloodshed on the screen.
