Dostana – Simple-minded tale, but different
Karan Johar, the finest filmmakers of Indian Film Fraternity has been adored for his cool romantic flicks of emotions. ‘Ridiculous’, perhaps this could be the one word verdict for this film and it’s an unconvincing start by Tarun Manshukhani, once an associate director of Karan Johar. Was this only a reason that made Karan Johar an applesauce taking up this project could be a billion dollar question? Above all, is the theme of homosexuality easily perceived by immature Indian audiences? For elite group of audiences, for whom the conceptualization of gay-themes are something clichéd, they would feel comfortable watching it… But for others of ‘B’ and ‘C’ centres, it’s a show of gorgeous Priyanka walking with alluring costumes and for missies, John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan’s machismos are great delights.
Right before few weeks, promos for this film are just being screened in television channels with not just trailers, but lots of exclusives inclusive of Making of Dostana, chat-shows with Karan and entire team of Dostana. Somehow, these traits will help the film sustaining in box offices for the first few weeks. Maybe, with Subash Ghai’s Yuvvraaj hitting screens next week and previous week releases Fashion, Golmaal Returns making good shows, the film’s promo could help in holding its place on screens.
The entire story is placed at the backdrops of Beach Party Capitol of World… Miami (For ardent fans of CSI – Miami on TV Box, its gonna be a fete of catching glimpse through exotic locations of their best locations)… Karan Johar has tried presenting audiences with a mix of friendship, fun, frolic and a special kind of love…. Quite an unexpected one…. A love between two hot guy Kunal (John Abraham) and Sameer (Abhishek Bachchan)…
When Sameer (Abhishek Bachchan) and Kunal (John Abraham) are turned down for an apartment because the landlady doesn’t want two strapping young men to corrupt her young sexy niece Neha (Priyanka Chopra) they go to plan ‘G’ – they pretend to be ‘Gay’ to secure the apartment.
All is well till they meet the sexy siren Neha and thus begins a journey of fun frolic and a test of friendship like never before. When Neha’s boss Abhimanyu (Bobby Deol) enters the fray as the third contender for her affections, it gets even hotter under everyone’s vests and bikinis and the boys get down and dirty in sunny Miami.
Getting on with performance, in this entangled rectangular love story, Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham steal the show…. Their pair-up can be regarded as the year’s best romantic couple. Abhishek Bachchan with his feminine vistas and John with his machismos form the best romantic couple…. Alluring Priyanka offers the uttermost delightedness to young lads with her gorgeous looks… Don’t miss her shortest swimsuit for she hasn’t appeared with such costumes in any of her previous flicks. Boman Hirani, Kiran Kher and our bubbly dude Bobby Deol are there with their best work.
Bobby Deol though appearing in minimal roles steals the show with his good performance. Kiran Kher as Abhi’s mom is awesome on her roles. Especially the sequence where she witnesses John, Abhishek, and Boman Hirani involved in intimate dance, it’s the best hilarious moments.
On the course of narration, Director Tarun carries the first half with more fun and frolic. My god! Then what happened to him in the second half. It keeps centering on the three guys taking their own of proposing love for Priyanka Chopra. Scenarios get away from the happiness in the second half with certain scenes…. It doesn’t need to be so complicated making audiences to yawn and fun is completely missing at certain points in latter half.
Musical score by Vishal-Shekar is completely disastrous except ‘Desi Girl’ and ‘Maad Lad La’ and nothing else offers delight. The duo combo is nowhere near their previous ventures of ‘Om Shanthi Om’, ‘Tashaan’ and ‘Bachna Ae Hasino’. On contrary, the other duo Salim-Sulaiman spells their best on background scoring all throughout the show… Cinematography by Ayanaka Bose are extraordinary and his canning of Miami, completely offers us a feel of watching a Hollywood movie like ‘American Pie’ and ‘The Promotion’. The shots are placed so realistic and good credits for director for sync or live-recording. Costumes designed by Manish Malhotra and Aki Narula are over-the-top with great color and designs…
On the whole, Dostana showcases as replica of yesteryear super hit movie with the same title starring Amitabh Bachchan and Chatruhan Sinha in lead roles. It’s the same tale of two friends; police officer and lawyer falling in love with same girl…. Hey! Just remember there’s no gay factor over there and Director Tarun can be praised for his innovative thought…
