Hollywood star Sean Penn will be honoured at a California film festival for his portrayal as San Francisco’s first openly gay elected official in the new film Milk.
According to a website, the actor will receive the Desert Palm Achievement Award at the 20th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival next month.
The honour follows high praise for his performance in the role of assassinated homosexual politician Harvey Milk.
Penn was recognised last year at the festival for directing Into the Wild and is the first to be honoured at the event in two consecutive years.
Past recipients of the award include Daniel Day-Lewis and John Travolta.
