Slumdog Millionaire – Embellished with perpetual richness
Not often are we privileged of witnessing the grandiloquent flicks in the History of World Cinema. One among the million flicks do make it bigger in those categories of films churned out by avant-garde filmmakers. Here, we have British Filmmaker Danny Boyle gifting us with the most memorable piece of work. ‘Marvelous’, ‘Trenchant’ and what else? Put your best words of appreciations for this auteur. Earlier it was Richard’s ‘The Gandhi’ that fetched the most prestigious awards including Golden Globes and Oscars. And nearly after 27 years, ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ makes us stride with pride and honor…
Prior to this film’s release, everyone thought this film is about a Slumdog turning into millionaire by taking part in the Asia’s most leading TV reality show of ‘Who wants to be a Millionaire?’ Yeah! You could’ve heard the promos how a underdog from the slums of Mumbai answer all the most complicated questions that even a Doctor, IAS officers and Engineers couldn’t opt. But, getting to watch him answer each of the questions exposes the lad’s most heart-breaking encounters touches our senses.
During this 120mins of show, you’re sure to laugh, smile, moved by emotional sequences, an unfading love, tragedy, union and more…
The story of Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) , an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India’s “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika (Frieda Pinto), the girl he loved and lost. Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show’s questions. Each chapter of Jamal’s increasingly layered story reveals where he learned the answers to the show’s seemingly impossible quizzes. But one question remains a mystery: what is this young man with no apparent desire for riches really doing on the game show? When the new day dawns and Jamal returns to answer the final question, the Inspector (Irrfan Khan)and sixty million viewers are about to find out. At the heart of its storytelling lies the question of how anyone comes to know the things they know about life and love.
Dev Patel makes you sing appraisals for him for each and every shot. Such is his performances that are spellbinding on all aspects. Be the first shot, where he says ‘I Knew All the Answers’ or smilingly answering the last question with an ease, he’s entrancing. Freida Pinto, the girl with deglamorized makeover yet steals the show with her minimal role. Madhur Mittal playing the role of Dev Patel’s brother brims with an extraordinary acting and especially his show during the penult minutes is top-notching. Quite wondering, if any actor from Tamil film industry would have boldly opted to don the role of a negative character? Hat off to Anil Kapoor for a stupendous role and because of his best choice, he would ever remain cherished in the History of Indian Cinema for being a part of a grandiloquent film. Irrfan Khan and Saurabh Shukla come up with their best efforts.
Precisely, Technical aspects have made the film richer. Be it cinematography, editing, Musical score or sound mixing, they’re top-notching. A groovy  tale narrated with a scintillating screenplay of Simon Beaufoy holds our attentions throughout the film. Rahman’s enthralling musical score offers the most essential factor of enhancing the visual quality. Sound mixing has been brilliantly mixed that mingles the great works of Danny’s motifs, innovative camera angles and Rahman’s music. Editing goes in hand with making the screenplay more interesting. Present and past of two different times has been precisely edited. The songs ‘Jai Ho’ and title song ‘O Saayo’ are excellent and possibly, ‘Ringa Ringa’ is already a favorite number of everyone across the globe. Its noteworthy that none of our cinematographers or filmmakers had ever depicted our own Mumbai so fantastic.
On the whole, Slumdog Millionaire would be a film that’s over-the-top on all quotients. It’s not just about a gripping tale of an uneducated boy winning the Millionaire contest, but something more than it. The film moves your heart, soaks your eyes, get your delighted, at moments you’ll feel adhered to the screens. A poignant tale of romance between Jamal and Latika right from their childhood that prolongs through various phases even after getting through so many tribulations is sure to melt our hearts.
