Billu – Don’t bill for the tickets
And again, there’s something much distressing for Srinivasan and Mohanan, makers of original version ‘Katha Parayumpol’. Earlier, they were stuck with shocking experiences as they had to watch a worst remake of the touching film as ‘Kuselan’ and ‘Kathanayakudu’… The film had spoiled down everyone’s expectations. And much before one could get away from that feel, here’s Priyadarshan who isn’t supposed to be a fit one to make movies. Is he the same director who has made ‘Kanchivaram – The World-recognized award winning movie’ and ‘Kaalapani – a brilliant historic movie’… Well, it makes us doubt he had copycatted someone’s script, maybe his associates or assistant’s. Wondering how well these films differ from his annoying remakes.
Of course, doubtlessly he has been regarded as one fine filmmaker one just remakes a best film into worst one and you need no illustrations out for it…
We feel there isn’t much you need to review on Billu (Barber) (We mention ‘Barber’… Because it’s removed from title and certain songs, it doesn’t get muted in dialogues)… IN fact replacing the character names on the review of either Kuselan or Kathanayakudu would do better… But we are quite different from Priyadarshan and we don’t wanna get pinned with above comments on us from our viewers.
Glimpse on this story and let’s pick out the plus and negative attributes…
Billu Barber is a story of a simple ordinary man who led an extra ordinary life. Bilas Rao Pardesi (Irrfan Khan) was living in his village with his wife Bindiya (Lara Dutta) and two great kids. Life was bitter sweet… we can say more sweet than bitter.
One day a superstar Sahir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) came into their lives and everything changed. Life changed, people changed, friends changed, the village changed but one man did not… Billu Barber.
Will this ordinary man redefine the words ordinary? Will the words see the greatness behind his small existence? And most of all, Will life ever be the same for Billu Barber again?
Like Pasupathy and Jagathpathy Babu, it’s Irrfan Khan saving the ship from getting sunk for some extent. But again the disastrous scenario is same with the unwanted glitz and glamour inserted spoiling the naturalistic attributes. If P. Vasu had portrayed Meena with rich looks though she’s from a poor family, Priyadarshan is not an exception. Lara Dutta, though not with glamour is strikingly beautiful with more make-overs. Would have been nice if she had appeared sans make-up. Irrfan Khan has our focus centered on him. Merely, he’s a genius and we agree with Priyadarshan when he said, ‘Irrfan’s performance in Slumdog Millionaire isn’t just the best one’… Shah Rukh shouldn’t have played extended cameo role shaking legs with three (sorry- one) beautiful misses… Kareena with her size zero is awkward on her dance performance for ‘Mar Jaani’ while Priyanka Chopra tries sustaining her image of ‘Fashion’. But fails terribly with the glamorous part and she can better quit from such role. Deepika Padukone is awesome and stunning with her dance in ‘Love Mera Hit Hit’…. We Love you Deepika…
Rajpal Yadav makes us laugh with more humorous touch and especially when he croons a song of SRK. Om Puri and rest of the casts are up with commendable works. But a irksome screenplay and narration by Priyadarshan spoils. Accidentally, the last 20mins of the film makes us glued to the screens. Actually, it’s not because of actors (Rajnikanth, Shah Rukh, Mammooty in all three versions), but for the stupendous penning of Srinivasan that prolongs till now..
Musical score by Pritam isn’t so catchy… Spare him for couple of songs ‘Love Mera Hit’ and ‘Kudhaya Kair’… Not all the songs are so trenchant and the background score too… Editing is so amateurish and why he has to go through so many cuts at unwanted situations. Manikandan’s cinematography steals our attention and it’s the only convincing factor on technical aspects.
On the whole, Billu is a film that shouldn’t have SRK accepting the role… When you had superstars playing it in original and remake versions, it should’ve been an actor with senior looks performing that role. Hope!! we would been enthralled if Amitabh Bachchan had taken the role.
But, all’s for spinning money that you’ve the star-casts here and the present ones aren’t going to make them win at box office…
