Delhi 6 – Decorously stunning

delhi-6Splendiferous indeed was the spell of Rakeysh Omprakash with his ‘Rang De Basanthi’. It was nourishing the hearts of youngsters with soul of rebels who strived to make India get away from the clutches of British. Of course, in no way Rakeysh steps out from the box of theme, but this time it’s about City of Old Delhi, Chandni Chowk where you feel to be into the world unseen before.

‘Delhi 6′ is about the busy streets of Chandni Chowk that’s loaded with Panwalas, Jelabi shops, good-hearted people with wonderful nature, friendliness is dwelling amongst everyone despites any barriers. Alas! But  you can’t imagine India without communalism, right? Yeah, you’ve them in more quantities that’s moreover an antagonist of this film.

Roshan (Abhishek Bachchan) sets out from New York to Delhi as his grandma (Waheeda Rehman) who wants to breathe her last not in shores of New York, but in her hometown. Sooner, Roshan gets more adhered to the Delhi streets that have friendly people, playing snookers with his uncle Ali (Rishi Kapoor), eating more Jelabis, flying kites, admiring pigeons on the terraces. But things are so sweet for his heart as they are certain dark shades of communalism. On the pars, Roshan gets to see that his two uncles (Om Puri, Pawan Malhotra) living in the same house have raised walls to divide their portions, their house women chat through the gap between the bricks, there’s still untouchables (Divya Dutta) and the beautiful Bittu (Sonam Kapoor) is still caged forcibly into the ancient-culture. With lots of questions prevailing in his mind, there’s Kala Bandhar (Black Monkey) terrorizing the locales…

With lots of parallel storylines, Rakeysh depicts the realities embedded inside the walls of Old Delhi…

What makes the film so beautiful is the impaling characterization… Everyone’s protagonist and it’s not merely Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor. If Rishi’s characterization as Ali who never expressed his love, Divya’s characterization as untouchable evokes the feel of pity on them. Watch the climax tie-up between Divya Dutta and Atul Kulkarni, they’re top-notching.

Not everyone can make such a film and Rakeysh deserves special mention out for it. With lots of storylines encircled with each other, it’s not an easy task to pen a gripping screenplay. ‘The stage of Ramayana’ and Abstract of ‘Kala Bandhar’ is really marvelous that moves along with the story of this film.

A.R. Rahman’s musical score is extraordinary and adds more colors to the visual enhancement with the background score. Especially the numbers ‘Masakali’ and ‘Arziyan’ are mesmerizing ones. The picturing is so perfect that we tend to walk across the Delhi-6 area. Cinematography Biran is one more highlighting attribute that present Delhi in a different shade.

On the whole, Delhi 6 is a film that shouldn’t be missed at any cost. Mark our words, it’s all about bold reality that has been handled with fiction. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra strides ahead from his Rang De Basanthi. Don’t expect this film to be more and more commercial. But it’s for the first time you will love watching a film based on Drama.
