Drona – Telugu Movie Review

March - 4 - 2009

drona1Though Nithin’s entry into films was a success and his subsequent films also went well. However, the success streak faced a break after his blockbuster under SS Rajamouli’s direction, ‘Sye’. After ‘Sye’, success almost eluded Nithin. So, he took some gap and returned to the industry. This time, he thought of shedding his earlier lover boy image and tried his hand as an action hero. Despite struggling hard and building a six pack body, Nithin failed to achieve the expected break. Once again, he came up with an action film called ‘Drona’ now. Besides playing well on the screen in action scenes and shaking his legs with lot of ease, he banked on the glamour of the heroine. He made her to expose to the maximum extent by convincing her to wear bikini and also to dance in revealing dresses with him. All these gimmicks proved futile, in the absence of a gripping story and the director’s immaturity in handling the film.

Drona (Nithin) is the son of a sincere police officer (Mukhesh Rushi). However, he disappears from home one day. Later, after 15 years, he returns home. He continues to conceal his identity though he gets shelter in his own house. The girl in their neighbourhood, Indu (Priyamani) loses her heart to Drona and once she recognises that he is none other than Drona. Though Drona pleads with her not to disclose his identity, she was forced to reveal the truth on one occasion. Even as the family feels happy for the return of Drona, the police arrest him on charges of robbery of Nizam jewellery. Later, Drona reveals the flashback that he was kidnapped by a mafia don called Sarkaar (Kelly Dorge) when he was a child. Many other children were also kidnapped similarly. All of them were given training in robbery and after a test, Drona emerges the topper and Sarkaar tells Drona that he would release all the boys if he could bring Nizam Jewellery. Drona agrees and completes the deal. Though Sarkaar promises to release the boys, he hatches a crooked plan to kill all of them. Drona foils his bid and escapes from his clutches. Learning all this, Drona’s father helps him to prove his innocence and Drona teaches a lesson to Sarkaar and hands him over to the police, besides handing over the Nizam jewellery. The film ends on a happy note with the union of Drona and Indu.

As far as action scenes and dances, Nithin gave his best. He struggled hard in dancing typical steps and did many risky fights. However, all his efforts go in vain in the absence of acting talents. Despite facing camera for several times, Nithin is yet to learn histrionics. He needs to improve his body language as well as the dialogue modulation. He is still unable to give facial expressions. The audiences who felt that the Telugu industry had got yet another good heroine in Priyamani with family looks after watching her performance in ‘Pellaina Kothalo’. Even in ‘Yamadonga’ too maintained the clean image. There was a sudden makeover and Priyamani geared up to give a hint to the producers that she was ready to appear in hot dresses and take the glamour doll image. She agreed to sport a bikini and appeared in revealing dresses during a couple of songs. However, she did not get a chance to perform in the film like any other glamour heroine. Kelly Dorge’s villainy is average as the director moulded the character in a comical way. Bob Antony made his presence on the screen after a long gap, while Dr Siva Prasad had a full-length role as the villain’s sidekick. Mukhesh Rushi and Sita are average in their roles. Sunil appeared in a couple of scenes but failed to get a smile on the face of the audiences. Likewise, a separate comedy track was shot on Venumadhav but he too failed to tickle the funny bone of the audiences.

The only solace in the film is the action scenes. The action scenes choreographed by Selvam are average. The opening shots picturised on Nithin appeared quite cinematic, with lot of gimmicks on motorcycle. Likewise, the music scored by Anoop Rubens during re-recording was a total failure, though a couple of songs turned out to be foot-tapping. Though the songs are not good to listen, the director ensured a sizzling performance by the heroine which made the mass audiences to sit in the theatre. Dialogues by Harshavardhan lacked punch. At the same time, cameraman Bhupati’s work appeared very amateurish. Though Karunakumar made a bid to keep several elements like action, love and family sentiment, he ignored penning a tight screenplay for their perfect presentation on the screen.

The film once again proved that a story is the heart of a film. In the absence of a gripping story, perfect screenplay to present it on the screen and an efficient director to mould different characters and extract the acting talents from the artistes, no film could be a hit. This theory was perfectly proved through ‘Drona’ once again. Mere skin show, sizzling performance, romantic scenes will not help for the success of the film. Once again, Nithin failed to pick a good story to suit his image. Moreover, the film reminds the audiences of several films that hit the screen in 80s and 90s and appeared as a mixture of different scenes from various films.
