U2’s Bono quizzes Clooney on politics, acting

May - 4 - 2009

george-clooney5Two legendary entertainer-activists — U2 lead singer Bono and Hollywood star George Clooney sat down for an interview at Rose Theater, Lincoln Center. Bono took the interviewer’s seat and quizzed Clooney about politics and acting.

Bono:You are an American who deeply cares about your country without it being in that corny patriotic, I will do some stupid stuff for the flag. You are saying I care about my country enough not to do stupid stuff. And this new patriotism that I think you represent.

George Clooney: Our country is in one of the its bigger crises it’s had. It seems at the exact time we’ve needed it, as a country, gotten the right guy. When we’d absolutely needed the right guy, we’d gotten him. I used to think well maybe because of what happened with Iraq, I kept thinking wow the first time we got unlucky. But I actually think it’s now. Now is the most important time. And we seem to have really the right guy.

Bono: I have a theory. I don’t know what you make of it. That actors in a certain sense are like Journalists. You collect the details of other people’s lives. Is that far-fetched?

George Clooney: Well, there is some truth to it. The difference is there is that responsibility there as a journalist. You have a responsibility to the truth or you hope you have a responsibility to the truth. If you’re an actor, you can make up your facts along the way. I studied Journalism in school. I only lacked smarts. Other than that, I had the proper hat for it.
