Vamanan – Decent start by Ahmed
A debut directorial really involves lots of inputs and hard works and Ahmed doesn’t seem to be an elision. As a filmmaker, he has chosen the best technical crew as well a sleek narration. But, there are few things that scatter away our attentions. The serious situation of real crisis has been prevailing for a long time, but by the time protagonist is connected, it’s too late.
Anand (Jai) comes to Chennai to fulfill his dreams of becoming a great actor and resides in his friend’s place (Santhanam). On the parallel track, a yet to become chief minister (Delhi Ganesh) is murdered by Anbu (Sampath). Coincidentally, a film crew shoots the modeling postures of actress Pooja (Lakshmi Rai) with a special camera attached to mini-chopper. On the process of canning the shots, the machine goes uncontrollable and gets stuck towards a tree where the entire murder drama is captured. When the ad filmmaker Vinod tries to handover the proof to cops, he’s murdered by Anbu’s henchmen. Meanwhile, Anand has fallen in love with Divya and unexpected things strike him as he gets connected with the mysterious drama.
How does he overcome the hurdles and prove himself to be innocent forms rest of the story.
Jai has improved a lot when it comes to performance, but we aren’t sure whether the guy is imitating Vijay or carries the same style by nature. Debutant Priya Anand isn’t much charming as you think and yet she tries to achieve something. But everything goes in vain. Hats off to Lakshmi Rai! The actress has been getting with enhancements over the days. Santhanam tries adding some hilarious moments to the film while Sampath as clichéd dons the negative role aptly. Like in Billa, Raghuman’s characterization has been well done. But you can predict his true colors right on his first take.
Director Ahmed has brilliantly watched the DVD of Christopher Nolan’s ‘Following’ and come up with a different version. The only difference you’ll spot between the two films is that the climax portion of ‘Following’ is the post-intermission sequences of Vamanan.
Musical score by Yuvan Shankar Raja is average, but has worked some best tunes on background. Aravind Krishna has chosen his ducky-Yellowish tone all over the show and glossy looks have been well done in post production works.
The first half starts off with something more splendidly and gradually drifts down towards intermission. With the second half turning to be more off predictable parts, Ahmad proves his skilled efficiency in penultimate sequences of say around 20mins.
