Ready to be scared? Horror films return to big screen

July - 15 - 2009

vikram-bhatt2After a successful run at the Box Office with horror films, filmmakers like Ram Gopal Varma and Vikram Bhatt are all set to give the audience a hair raising experience yet again.

It took Vikram Bhatt 10 flops in a row to realize what he is best at. Horror is the magic word for him. The success of flicks like Raaz and 1920 has now inspired the filmmaker to continue with the same genre. He is currently shooting his next horror film titled Shapit.

“It’s not the regular horror film, it’s horror mixed with adventure. After Raaz and 1920 I had to complete my trilogy with this one,” he said.

Shapit will also mark the debut singer Udit Narayan’s son Aditya Narayan who plays the lead role. Though this 21-year-old is a familiar face on TV , he is nervous about his big screen debut.

“I always wanted to be a part of this entertainment industry,” he said.

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma who has successfully managed to scare movie buffs in the past with films like Bhoot, Phoonk and Vastu Shastra is also ready with his next horror film Agyaat. It’s a story of a film crew caught in a forest. RGV insists that this one will send shivers down viewers’ spine.

“I love scaring people, it gives me a high. It’s like, pack a bunch of them in a theatre, switch off the lights and they are caught by their throat with all the tool you have to get that adrenaline rush,” described RGV.

Also in the pipeline is the sequel to Mohit Suri’s Raaz – The Mystery Continues.

“Horror as a genre in which we intend to innovate and explore it with a strong narrative,” said filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt.

With Percept Picture Company recently opening a separate division for horror films – which will produce about 10 films a year and BIG Pictures too keenly looking at new scripts in this genre, it’s clear that horror films are here to stay.
