Daddy Cool – Not Good, Not Bad
Fine! ‘Daddy Cool’ has got a good plot – about unexpected twists and turns in a funeral drama. All praise to Frank Oz, British Filmmaker who enthralled audiences with his ‘Death at a Funeral’. For sure, this film was a fantabulous comedy entertainer although it had a big constraint showcasing entire film at the same place.
Of course, ‘Daddy Cool’ is an exact copycat of this film that doesn’t differ from ‘Death at a funeral’ at any extent. But don’t expect the same mirthful riots over here as director K. Murali Mohan Rao stumbles with his poor writing from the very beginning till the end.
It’s a painful morning for Steven Lazarus (Sunil Shetty) losing his lovable dad Douglas (Sharat Saxena) and he goes through the preparation of funeral in his big villa of Goa. As a token of paying homage to his dad, Steven plans-up for a decently organized funeral. But things doesn’t go as planned when kinky guests with flakey nature: selfish brother Brian (Ashish), his cousin sister Maria (Tulip) with her boyfriend Michael (Aftab) (regrettably, he’s doped after the intake of her Brother Harry’s (Chunkey) pills. Nagging guy Carlos (Jaffrey) with his forever suspicious wife Jenny (Kim), a dim-witted uncle Murphy (Prem Chopra), who frequently comes up with bad words, an aspiring model Ayesha (Sophie). Amongst all of these annoying scenarios, Steven is further when his wife Nancy (Aarti) invites an estate agent Pinto (Vijay Patkar) so they get a new flat for them immediately. More than all, things break loose out of hell when a stranger Andrew (Rajpal) reveals a clandestine relationship with Steven’s dad.
What next unfolds are the comical situations that entertain in few parts but not as ne plus ultra.
As mentioned earlier, the film is nowhere near to the original version as it lacks solidity from frame to frame. Firstly, Murali Mohan Rao should’ve studied the audiences’ psychology on whether Indian viewers would accept such crude-bare double etendre and filthy languages on the screens. The next flaw is that Murali fails to bring this together as a successful drama because of getting the entire things shot at one place. Nothing to blame about the script: it’s quite innovative, but he fails to present them in an enchanting manner. Better, he could’ve staged this as a play and filled the pockets of producers with more profits.
When it comes to handpick the best parts of this film, there are so small in number. There are few sequences where we have really got to appreciate Murali. As well, Sunil Shetty has put forth his whole-hearted hard work. Indeed, he’s performance when compared with others are best to termed as ‘Chalk & Cheese’. None of the other star-casts have done a commendable job.
Thank God! We aren’t served with more songs and this is more goodish when it comes to director. He’s smart on reducing the nettlesome moments from audiences.
As a whole, ‘Daddy Cool’ can be enjoyed if you watch it with 100% loss of logical ability. But elite group of audiences can better neglect this show for their sake.
