Kanden Kadhalai – Tamil Movie Review
Published on Nov 2 2009
Couple of things have kept us awaited the film’s release – Director Kannan’s adeptness over his debut ‘Jayam Kondan’ and the cherishing romantic tale of ‘Jab We Met’.
But then, both the solid reasons strongly disappoint you. Even if you hadn’t watched the original version of ‘Jab We Met’, we aren’t sure whether the film gratifies you on all aspects.
The main problem with the remake is that Kannan seems to have overloaded ‘Kanden Kadhalai’ with unwanted commercial ingredients. Say for instances, Bharath while saving Thamannah from bully gets involved with hand-in-hand combat. That’s really ridiculous as Imtiaz Ali had just sorted out that issue with Kareena’s hug with Shahid. We’re terribly sorry for comparing both the version as it isn’t the rule. But when a great movie is remade, things have to be ensured that tastes of original piece aren’t spoiled.
How come director Kannan could relate the girl of ‘Theni’ with the Punjabi Kudi? Of course, both the women are strong-minded and courageous. But then tastes are likely different. As well Kannan should’ve changed the concept of protagonist’s mother marrying her auditor. Naturally, Western culture is completely different and though it’s present herein reality, our audiences wouldn’t love it, particularly with women audiences.
The film opens with reclusive Sakthi (Bharath), a young tycoon who has lost his business and love getting into a train of unknown destination (but again, Bharath sees the destination board of Pandian express). Over there, he comes across non-stop talkative Anjali (Thamannah) on the way back to her home town Theni. She reveals about her idea of eloping with Gowtham (Silandhi fame Munna), Over the night journey, things take a different turn in their lives with unexpected twists.
If Thamannah was projected as a strong minded girl and keeps insisting about running away with her boyfriend, she could’ve eloped straight from Chennai instead of moving to her home town and then running off. If the proposal with Raasu Mama (Santhanam) was the cause, it isn’t a big reason. Bharath and Thamannah have blindly imitated Shahid and Kareena. What was actually Kannan doing? Hadn’t he noticed something about inviting ridicule with such act? This happens to be the biggest minuses in this film. Santhanam’s comedy tracks are as usual and some of the scenes are really unwanted. Azhagam Perumal does justice to his role and so does Nizhalgal Ravi. Jeeva has been completely wasted and despites getting some importance in ‘Ninaithale Inikkum’, he has chosen this film that doesn’t feature him in more than 5mins. It was really surprising to see audiences’ happy reaction when he appears for the first time on screens. ‘Silandhi’ fame Munna does justice to his role while Sapan Saran again, is a copycat of Kareena’s sister role and looks odd.
None of the songs are worthy heeding to. Vidhayasagar should’ve tried composing some of his own tunes or else just retune the original tracks of Pritham in ‘Jab We Met’. But tuning melodies on the same lines turns out to be a silly affair. Cinematography by P.G. Muthaiah requires special mention and dialogues by Pattukttai Prabhakar are quite engrossing.
On whole, ‘Kanden Kadhalai’ doesn’t exceed our expectations and nothing seems to be really interesting with the film. Despites possessing an extraordinary story like ‘Jab We Met’, Kannan should’ve opted for some other star-casts like Vinay, Trisha or Genelia.
