Kurbaan – Hindi Movie Review

November - 23 - 2009

kurbaanWith visual promos brimmed with steamy shots of Saif-Bebo, the producers had evoked a sense of great expectations amongst the audiences. And what happens when you watch the film? Nothing, a load of disappointments of letting everyone bang their heads against the walls.

Kurbaan in no way differs from various flicks based on terrorism motifs in United States. Precisely, it’s a sickening experience to hear the same dialogues by devils’ advocates of why they turned into terrorists.

Karan Johar’s script suffers with lack of substantiality and stumbles on the very first hour. Though, there are some twists and turns in latter part, the film fails to engross to the least. Lots of illogical attributes does scatters down our attentions on every part.

Avantika (Kareena Kapoor), a professor in university of Delhi and comes across Ehsaan Khan (Saif Ali Khan), a temporary professor in the same university. Within first 20mins, they fall in love and get married. Avantika gets a call from United States University to come back and rejoin.

When she reveals about the good news, Ehsaan comes up with an idea of getting married and fly together.

Well, things get along well in United States as they move into a beautiful house situated in the Indian neighborhood. On the same night of their arrival, they are invited by their neighbors for dinner.  Everything is fine and perfect as Avantika feels like being in paradise.

Next day morning, Salma, one of the women Avantika met the night before at the dinner, visits her under the pretext of gifting her sweets. But then she begs Avantika to save her from a grave danger. What unfolds next is a series of unexpected thrills where betrayals become order of the day and innocence is misused.

A journalist (Vivek Oberoi) gets connected with the irrelevant drama only to find that things are worst than he expected.

First things first, Vivek Oberoi does a mind-boggling job with his extraordinary performance. We really regret how come the actor could waste so much of years in his careers without delivering such efforts in his previous films. Although Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor have tried taking on things with finesses, it’s Vivek Oberoi overshadowing them. Om Puri breathes life in to the characterization he has enacted. Kiron Kher has done justice to her role. Watch her stupendous show in penultimate sequence.

Though terrorism, Muslims and their fundamentalisms maybe  a clichéd conceptualization, Karan Johar should’ve trimmed the duration, reworked on script adding more ‘thrill’ moments and presented the film well. Most of the film’s sequences remind us off as though watching a Manirathnam film with lots of silence and dark-toned cinematography.

These attributes are so absurd. Kareena sees the dead body of Salma and gets chased by her family members. Can’t she scream on the road? Vivek Oberoi’s clandestine operations are so ridiculous. If he had carried through entire mission with the aid of a cop, then things would’ve been perfect.

Musical score by Salim-Sulaiman acts as a spoilsport. Unapt music for almost all the situations makes you annoyed with audio. Unwanted orchestra hits and percussions, hard rocks, etc…etc… sickens us down. Cinematography as mentioned before has been canned with dark tones. Is it Karan’s idea about presenting the visuals in such way only to imply that it’s a serious film? This is an amateurish attempt.

Finally, ‘Kurbaan’ would’ve been a better film if Karan had followed the tactics we mentioned above. But as of with this film, it lacks perfection in narration as well in technical aspects. Apart from last 30mins of the film, you’ll feel there’s nothing worth to watch in ‘Kurbaan’, even the unwanted backless shots of Kareena during intimate sequence with Saif.
