Films noirs isn’t something unusual when it comes to Tamil Cinema. Perhaps, we could’ve gone through plenty of flicks based on those genres, but merely few evoke the sense of likeability. ‘Renigunta’ is a film about hardcore young criminals, for whom killing means as simple as sipping a coffee.

Does it bring traces of any movies to your perception? Maybe, ‘City of Gods’ by Fernando Merles happened to be one such movie that depicted the barbarians’ life of death and insecurities.

But the similarities end here as ‘Renigunta’ deviates itself from action and violence towards love and hope. But at last, there’s something unexpected.

Fate winning over destiny!!!

Its early morning 5 at Renigunta… Three guys: Sakthi, Michael and Dabba (Johnny, Sandeep and Ganesh) are on the run from cops triggering bullets on them. Within fraction of seconds, you’re pulled back into flashback as Sakthi narrates the story of how he ended up these 4 boisterous criminals.

Set in downsouth of Tamil Nadu,

Sakthi is pitted into prison when he attempts to murder a good for killing his parents. It’s a speculative situation for the young guy for getting beaten up persistently by the cops. But later, he finds solaced with these juveniles. Their next motive is about breaking loose out of prison and heading towards train. Over the train, they are urged to get down at Renigunta.

What happen next are unexpected turns of events that have love, affection, and violence and ‘shock’ elements at equivalencies.

Firstly, it’s better to mention about technical aspects. The camera department has executed some of the best shots.  Thanks to producer! He seems to have spent lavish sum over the Akila cranes and super 35mm cameras. But, DI works look slightly amateurish and things could’ve been better if focused. Ganesh Raghavendra’s musical score is enchanting. Couple of songs – ‘Mazhai’ and ‘Vizhigalilae’ is marvelous piece of works. But on some situations, we tend to notice the traces of A.R. Rahman over background score. Antony’s editing is sleek and he doesn’t emit his usual amateurishness as in some of his other films…

On the performance, every guy on the title cards excels expressing their earnest efforts. The biggest plus is Johnny’s physique suiting the stunts. Though some of the stunts looks animated (could’ve been avoided). Sanusha as a deaf and dumb girl impresses. Stills Vijay aka Bunker as a mediator lives up to expectations. Theepetti Ganesh requires special mention for his ability to spell laughter and emotions.

There’s no point in mentioning – The film has more violence, it could’ve been avoided…. Yeah! Censor has already passed ‘A’ Certificate and we know the age groups they actually mean. But on pars, women cohorts may not find likeability as there’s nothing focused on them, apart from couple of characters.

But when it comes to marking our verdict, ‘Renigunta’ is yet another new wave in resurgence of Tamil Cinema.

If you’re looking out for a different experience, watch it.
