Rocket Singh – Salesman of the Year – Hindi Movie Review

December - 12 - 2009

rocket singh salesman of the yearFor past couple of weeks, Bollywood seems to be delivering the commendable pieces, which is something rare these days. Of course, ‘Paa’ was an extraordinary film for its exceptional conceptualization and this week, we’ve ‘Rocket Singh’.

Can you term ‘Rocket Singh’ as a reality cinema? Obviously, there are certain scenarios that’ll let you ardently reflected. Especially, for those whose job experiences were brimmed with jubilant and tribulations, there’s something close to your heart to be experienced in this film.

Harpreet Singh Bedi (Ranbir Kapoor) has just graduated, and his marks are, well, let’s say a little embarrassing. But marks never stopped him from dreaming of an exciting and adventurous career, and they never will.

He takes a deep, positive breath and dives into the world of sales, rumored to be an ultra cool career for all smart people blocked from entering medical, engineering or business schools by brainless entrance exams. It’s everything he dreamt of, with its smooth dressing, smoother talking men and women who can sell ice to an Eskimo, dreams to an insomniac, and a lifetime mobile connection to a dying man. But soon, his idea of success begins clashing with the strange ways of these ‘professionals’ and ‘bosses’ he looked up to.

Rocket Singh – Salesman of the Year is the sometimes thoughtless, sometimes thoughtful story of a fresh graduate trying to find a balance between the maddening demands of the ‘professional’ way, and the way of his heart – and stumbling upon a crazy way which turned his world upside down, and his career right side up.

What makes ‘Rocket Singh’ is so exceptional? Naturally, it calls for honorable mention for its unparalleled theme. Not many films in Bollywood and other regional flicks have been centered on ‘office’ factors. On the dot, Shimit Amin makes sure that his characterizations are well established. Kudos to this auteur, his delineations are fantabulous and so close to reality. Be the office boy or receptionist with their prominent roles, they’ve done a laudable job.

The screenplay turns out to be slightly sluggish in latter part, but then the same ‘character’ factors keeps it going with right momentum. On the flip side, too much focus on pragmatic look for the office panoramas lets you perceive ‘Rocket Singh’ as a docu-drama on few portions.

Hats off to Ranbir Kapoor! The young lad is implausibly excellent as he emotes towards the various situations. No wonder, the actor could easily steer-up well with his previous film ‘APKGK’, which never possessed a virtual essence.

Gauhar Khan strives hard to prove off her proficiency and indeed excels with it. A spellbinding performance by Puri and Nitin while Sheshzan sleepwalks through her role… It really makes us wonder, is she aware about what’s actually going on. Prem Chopra doesn’t get much vitality to showcase his potentials.

Technically, the musical part is disappointing as none of the tracks live up to our expectations. Cinematography is perfect and nothing special to mention about editing.

On whole, ‘Rocket Singh’ is all about a contemporaneous take on matter-of-facts with the right mix of commercial ingredients.
