With half-dozen of punch dialogues persistently aired on all networks of Sun Pictures, you would’ve drawn a conclusion that ‘Vettaikaran’ would be much alike Vijay’s previous films ‘Kuruvi’ and ‘Villu’.
Of course, the film has punch dialogues and unbelievable stunt sequences, but they’re comparatively ameliorative with pertinence to the other films we’ve mentioned.
To be precise, the first half of this film (90mins) is brimmed with finesse and is more or less racy. Director Babu Sivan has utilized the first half for amusing moments with fun, frolic, and establishment of characterizations. But in the latter part, he has completely replicated the formulas of Dharani and Perarasu films. Chances are there to get sickened with the repeated acts about hero retaliating for the baddies while for Vijay fans; it may be an appreciative fare.
In simple, Vijay’s usual tactics, red-hot Anushka’s glamorous show, songs may capture the interests of B and C centre.
The film is about an ambitious-yet-uncaring Ravi (Vijay), who hasn’t passed his 12th grade in school, but his confident about becoming a great cop like Devaraj IPS, who is making headlines in the state for reducing the crime rate. Soon after succeeding with his attempts in exams, Ravi embarks on for his graduation in Chennai so as to gain his dream job.
Ravi engages himself as an auto-driver for his bread and butter as his girl-classmate helps him in hiring an auto rickshaw from her dad (Manickam Vinayagam). For Ravi, it’s love at first sight when he comes across Susheela (Anushka), the girl whom he met on his way to Chennai.
When he has won the heart of his ladylove, his job and studies are going well, Ravi has an uncalled encounter with the city’s deadliest goon Chella and his father Vedanayagam (Salim Ghosh), who’ve been ruining the town with illegal business and rowdyism. On pars, Ravi’s quest on Devaraj IPS, who’s missing in town for past 6 months, connects these characters for a speculative conflict.
As mentioned earlier, the film belongs to Vijay as Babu Sivan seems to have penned the script after he signed deal with the actor. Vijay’s fans will surely delight with his dance and stunt sequences.
It’s worth mentioning that the first fight in this film strikes after the first hour, which is something rare. But the second half is dosed with more stunts that’ll turn us irksome and the second half is so lengthy. The way protagonists settles the scores with baddies has been lifted from various films (mainly carries the traces from films churned by Babu’s mentor Dharani and Perarasu).
Salim Ghosh requires special mention for his decent efforts to bring a different dimension on antagonism. Anushka might have boasted that she has a meaty role in this film, which proves to be a bare lie. She has nothing to do other than shaking legs with Vijay and romancing him all the time.
Babu Sivan lacks creativity in depicting the characters as most of them are clichéd.
Say for instance, Vijay’s role has traces of ‘Bhagavathy’ and ‘Sivakasi’. Anushka’s role is similar to Reema Sen in ‘Bhagavathy’. The villain characters are lifted from various Tamil films of Dharani-Perarasu while the characterization of Devaraj IPS is a replication of Nasser in ‘Dhil’ and Manoj K Jayan in ‘Dhool’.
There are lots of logics missing and we’ve got to blame Babu Sivan for it. Like an IPS officer suddenly disappearing in city and media channels aren’t making reports on him, whom it used to continuously prints news about.
Technically, the film has songs well-tailored for Vijay fans and they’re sure to rock with these peppy tunes. Cameraman Gopinath has failed to crank excellent shots and editing is quite commendable.
If stunts, certain repeated actions and plot were reduced in the second half, the film would have been a great treat for universal audiences.
But as of now, ‘Vettaikaran’ becomes a must-watch movie for those ardent fans of ‘Ilayathalapathy’, who’re ready to accept his acts: even if he breaks the rock into pieces (Mahesh Babu’s ‘Okadu’ as ‘ATHADU’) and burning off villain’s face with cigarette lighter and alcohol (copycatted from introduction scene of Telugu ‘Billa)…

Here is another B grade flick from Vijay’s factory of Mass Masala! There is nothing new in this action-revenge-average comedy flick and most of the scenes also dragged from his old movies like Pokkiri, Bhagavathy, Thiruppachi etc… Also Vijay is completely surrendered in front of the demigod of Kollywood, Rajinikanth. He almost copied the superstar’s style and mannerisms even in dialogue delivery. So once again the actor proves that there is no place for originality in his films or his acting.

I have watched Vettaikaran 2day and this Movie is amazing . People who says it is a flop can just go to hell or try to learn better Tamil because was really intersting to watch and Vijay looks so cool in this Film.It is much better then ATM Kuruvi and Villu and I like his role.The Fight scene were Sick and I can tell to anyone that this movie is great.

Storyline: The hero has his values intact, and when he is challenged by ruffians he isn’t going to let them get away easily.
Bottomline: Typically Vijay!
When fans wish to see him only as a largerthan- life hero why not provide them the treat has been Vijay’s stand always. He makes no bones about it, and reiterates the fact once again with `Vaettaikkaaran’ (U/A). From the opening scene writer-director Babu Sivan’s screenplay travels at breakneck speed — Vijay enters with a lot of fire as always, sustains the tempo with an ample dose of comedy in solo style and brims with energy in stunts. If you sense a lull post-interval it is more because of the two duets. Why do commercial filmmakers so religiously adhere to the three-song-sequence diktat? Surely, one duet less can’t harm a film – in fact it can only work the other way round.
Good wins
Generally, Vijay’s formula revolves around more or less the same storylines, with permutations and combinations to bring in differences between one and another. But among his recent releases `Vaettaikkaaran’ is a better outing than Vijay’s last three — `Kuruvi,’ `Azhagiya Tamizh Magan’ and `Villu’ – put together. And true to the MGR film title, `Vaettaikkaaran’ is an action-filled game of the hunter and the hunted.
Sometimes you feel the clear demarcation between heroism and villainy in cinema is healthy unlike the recent filmy trend of scamps doubling up as heroes and knavery confused with gallantry. Hence, believable or not, it’s heartening to see evil punished and honesty scale heights in `Vaettaikkaaran.’
Ravi’s (Vijay) goal in life is to become a straightforward police officer like Devaraj IPS (Srihari). As the upright government servant brought to his knees by powerful scallywags Srihari makes a mark. Ravi comes to the city for higher studies but as is the norm the evil elements around won’t let him be. Seeing Vijay as a college student is a little difficult to take but his wit, pranks and sensibilities make you forget it. His friend and classmate Uma (Sanchita Padukone) is in trouble – villain Chella (Ravishankar), an insufferable ogler, has ordered her to his home that evening. Reason enough for Ravi to bristle up in anger – one thing leads to another and soon he is forced to take on kingpin Vedanayakam (Salim Ghose). No prizes for guessing the final winner!
Without a comedian in tow (Sathyan doesn’t appear in all the humorous scenes) Vijay tackles the genre with ‚lan and tickles the funny bone. Spirited in action dance and romance he makes his fans go tizzy with joy. Beautiful and popular Telugu heroine Anoushka debuts in Tamil and fills the bill.
It’s funny to watch the young wife of Sukumar (Sathyan) mouth her dialogue so very expressively and confidently in a language of her own, with lip sync far off the mark! In contrast you can’t help admiring Salim Ghose’s diction, which he has been honing to perfection from the days of `Vetri Vizha’ with Kamal!
V.T. Vijayan’s editing helps in the raciness of `Vaettaikkaaran.’ The energy, the punches in the lyric (Kabilan) and the dance of Vijay and his junior, while the proud papa looks on are pluses of the `Naan Adichaa.’ number. Vijay Antony, the composer, reaches the next level in mass appeal with this Vijay starrer. Yet the lack of a melodic piece is a disappointment. `Kanal’ Kannan’s action choreography may not be natural, but the vim and vigour is stunning.
Without punch lines, finger- snapping challenges or bravado, Vijay provides a sumptuous superhuman fare, predictable of course, but reasonably entertaining!

He is undoubtedly an all-rounder superstar. He is the undisputed king at the ticket counters and his record of box-office success is unmatched and his films have collectively made more business than any other hero and even his severe critics have recognised his astounding reach and potential.
After a lukewarm Villu released early this year, a lot was riding for Ilayathalapathy on his new release Vattaikaran. And today, Vijay is all smiles after the film has been declared a hit by the trade.
The film did not have any big names like a big director, top comedian, top music director and added to that a heroine who is a newcomer to Tamil. But all the buyers and distributors in Tamilnadu and Kerala are happy that the money they invested on the star has paid off.
In this exclusive first-ever interview, after Vettaikaran release, Vijay sheds his famous reticence and talks non-stop, to Sify.com. Excerpts
Why do you go into a hiding before the release of your films and avoid the press?
I know that media activity is part of my job but I tend to avoid it. Personally I prefer not to talk about my films prior to release and think that my film should speak for itself. And in the case of Vettaikaran, Sun Pictures was going full steam with promotions, so there was no need for me to do anything more (smiles).
What is the reaction of Vettaikaran from your fans and audiences? Did you watch the film in a theatre?
I love to watch my films in theatres to see the audience reaction. But now I have stopped it, as it creates unnecessary problem for all concerned. I want my fans to watch the film in peace and not to be disturbed, by my presence.
So how do you gauge a film?
I have my family and close friends who are my biggest critics. They will only point out the negatives first and then come to the highlights. I am also very lucky to have fans who feed me with the precise report of which scene, dialogue or song worked.
Do you take criticism and negative publicity in your stride?
Of course, yes. Enakku ethellam pazhagipochu .. (I have been used to all this) and I don’t get carried away by success or failures.
Do you do a post-mortem of your films?
Yes, I do. That has worked to my advantage and I try to better with every film.
Tell us about the songs in Vettaikaran which is a major plus for the film? And which is your favourite?
Vijay Antony’s songs are all peppy and mass numbers which have been placed and picturised well in the narrative. Among all the songs I rate Puli Urumudhu… and Naan Adichal… as my favourite.

You have tried different looks in the songs. Please comment?
(Laughs) These songs are all imagination songs and I like to try out something new in every film. When we were shooting for the song Kalikalan.. song, Dinesh master tossed up this idea to do an Aamir Khan act like the Tata Sky ad, where right-half of me is a girl and the left-half is a guy! I was initially hesitant as I had to take off my moustache and I could not imagine doing it. Later I thought it is a wacky idea, which is very challenging! From make up to costume, there was a lot of minute detailing. I took off half my moustache and we shot that particular scene after completing the film and incorporated it to the song. I think it was worth the trouble as my fans love it. And for the Oru Chinna Thamarai…, song when we brainstormed about how to look different, Banu suggested that why don’t I try long hair, which I always wanted to.
Why don’t you work with big directors and try out something different deviating from your usual formula?
I am ready. (Smiles) Are producers and distributors game for it?
Which is the favourite scene in Vettaikaran?
It is the 20 minutes of the second half when the villain played by Salim Ghouse takes me on a guided tour of his business’s and I walk behind him silently listening to all his boasting and at the end of it start reacting in a different manner. I loved this scene even when the director narrated it to me and trust me that this particular scene is getting maximum claps and whistling in theatres.
Is Sura, your 50th film follow the same formula pattern?
It is too early to comment on Sura. All I can say is that, the film is almost 50 percent complete and it is shaping up well.

James Cameron’s magnum opus ‘Avatar’ and Vijay’s ‘Vettaikaran’ had hit the screens on the same Friday that led to a greater expectation amongst film buffs. Indeed, both the films witnessed house-packed shows for the first three days, even with the special shows at morning 6 turning to be houseful.
But now by the 5th day after release, we happen to witness that Vettaikaran collections have gradually fallen down the list. For a greater surprise, ‘Avatar’ has got almost all the shows booked till this weekend. Since Christmas holiday weekend will prolong nearly for 3 days, ‘Avatar’ is sure to taste success.

Vijay’s much-awaited film Vettaikaaran has come out with good response among his fans. Though the title makes you remember the yesteryear blockbuster movie, this film is a complete masala entertainer. Debut director Babu Sivan has become a lucky charm for Vijay in this action extravaganza.
THE CHARACTERS
Ravi (Vijay), a youngster with lots of dreams about his future, makes his journey from Tuticorin to Chennai. On the way, he sees Suseela (Anushka) and falls in love with her instantaneously. Sayaji Shinde plays the bad cop who does everything to please Devanayakam (Salim Ghouse). Devanayakam uses Sayaji to protect his son Chella (Ravi Shankar) who tries to spoil the life of his fellow classmate Uma (Sanchitha Padukone).
THE PLOT
Ravi is a happy youth who somehow finishes his schooling and makes his way to Chennai to achieve his long dream of becoming a cop. His inspiration was Sri Hari, a tough cop he admires from childhood. He joins a Chennai college and makes ends meet by driving an auto rickshaw. Like all masala movies, there is a love angle. Ravi falls in love with Suseela and wins her heart with the help of her grandmother. But life is not smooth sailing for this young man. His chance encounter with Chella changes the course of his life. Chella spoils the life of Uma, who is Ravi’s classmate. When he tries to fight Chella, he faces trouble from Chella’s father Devanayakam, the major villain of the story. What happens next? How does Ravi face the bad men? Catch Vettaikaaran to know.
THE TECHNIQUE
Performance
Vijay’s recreates his magic on screen, after several not so good performers at the box office. The film’s punch dialogues have received a huge round of applause from his fans. Be it romantic scenes or action sequences or comedy track or punch dialogues, Vijay has satisfied his fans immensely in every scene. Anushka plays the glam doll with just a few scenes and a couple of songs.

Babu Sivan shows no signs of being a newcomer. After playing safe by casting Vijay in this commercial flick, he has done a good job.

The songs are peppy and are already a big hit. ‘En Uchimandai’, ‘Chinna Thamarai’ and ‘Puli Urumudhu’ are the most popular ones. The picturisation of the songs has added to the charm of the music. Great work by Vijay Antony

I am Challenging to any vijay fan,is this movie is good,please say it from your heart….
I am not a fan for any single personality,i am a fan of good cinema of any languages.
Just imagine movies like RENIGUNTA with new comers are rocking.
Even I like Aadhi and Thirupachi,there is a fire in the movie.
Guys for a masala movie the necessary items are comedy = 50%,action = 10%,songs = 20%,sentiment = 20%.
In this movie comedy is just irritating,songs to hear is good,but on screen is very poor,poor sentiments(srihari part is not creating any impact).
The problem for vijay is there is not a single super hit telugu available to him.
In telugu Mahesh film not released for the past 2 years,and pawan kalyan also,NTR,PRABHAS also suffering.
Magadheera is mega hit because of its excellent making style.
HEY MASS HEROES!!YOU JUST SIT AND THINK,NOBODY CAN CHEAT THE PEOPLE.
HEROWORSHIPPING DAYS ARE ALL GONE,EVEN IN ANDHRA WHAT HAPPENED TO CHIRANJEEVI.

I saw the Vettaikaran movie twice(First & second day in coimbatore), the Opening was very big. After Padaiyappa, Muthu from Rajinikanth i really saw big opening and cheerful audiences inside the theatre till the end of the movie. First film to be released in more number of theatres in Coimbatore. Ghilli was the previous film did this record in our city. Now its again another Vijay’s film which has done it. Dont watch the movies blindly Friends. Take K.S Ravikumar’s veiw on directing his movie, he use to say that he is not here to preach or do any service he is here to just entertain by doing commercial movies and make profittable business to the producers. thats what he is still now doing even in dhasavatharam he had many commercial elements. Likewise Vijay has his own style. Branded commercial formula, he is sticking to it. but the main thing is is he doing it well. yes of course he is maintain a good level in giving such commercial film. Many complaint that vijay is following foot-step of rajini kanth, what is bad in it. We say that After kamal, suriya’s acting is nice. he is the one who can fill the space of Kamal. Then who is there to fill the space of Rajini(Sources say that ENDHIRAN is last Rajini movie) ? Thats the space vijay is trying to take. Is there any other Mass hero who stick on to a commercial entertainer in Tami cine industry to take the job. Everyone tries to do different role to sustain their place in cine industry. Vijay has choosen the commercial plot. why you people dont understand it. First have a nice approach on seeing a movie, even without seeing the movie many would start saying their own review. We cant expect a moondram piram or guna acting from Rajini and vice versa padaiyappa or anna malai from kamal. like wise vijay’s film is just a mass entertainer with Nice Songs, Dance, Comedy, Fight and Punch Dialogues. Atleast grow-up to differentiate movies categories correctly friends. Dont listen to fake review, watch vettaikaran for it pakka mass masala entertainer. Dont miss. 100% Mass film. Watch with your childrens, they would enjoy a lot. i really saw the children’s respones, they like the film very much. Watch it. Sure Shot Friends…

This movie is a complete GARBAGE, this is most worst movie in Vijay’s Career.
Villu is better than vettaikaran, so just imagine how good the movie is
vijay uttering venniradai moorthy type of dialogues,day by day he become worse than any other hero.

Hi Sangeetha.. I do accept that every one have their own style. But don’t tell me vijay has his own style. He just follows rajinikanth’s style. More over its stale to watch same kind of masala movies from him always.
He utters punch dialogues in all his movies. Thats really sickening. Why does he fly in air for stunts? Can’t he fight naturally like the stunts in subramaniapuram and renikunta?
Don’t simply blame the reviewer. He has done a perfect job. The review is unbiased. May be you are an ardant fan of vijay. that is y u supporting him.
U know wat, i was a die hard of fan until i watched kuruvi.

Vijay is a mass hero all have to accept the fact.. and someone admit it 100%, (like the reviewer ) and find some reasons to blame him.. good everyone have their own style.. why didn’t you people think of that.. ??
I’m a die hard fan of Surya, (I wated the movie Vaaranam Aayiram more than 20 times.) but I feel that he always trying to show his body in his every film after Ghajini..and I may say he is the only succeeder of Kamal Hassan, When Vijay is the succeeder of Rajnikanth.
Think before you make a review… I request you to watch the movie as a common man.. not like any fan.. It’s great Entertainer.. unlike his previous flops.
