10 Biggest Disappointments of 2009 in Kollywood

December - 31 - 2009

kanthaswamyAlas! This has been out and most disappointing year for almost everybody in Tamil film industry. Hypes for big tickets were pretty high from the previous year and thusly resulting in more eagerness… But these were all meant to dash down our hopes terribly with none of them living up the least of prospects.

Here come the 10 films that transformed our curiosities into letdowns.

1. Kanthaswamy:
Perhaps, it can be distinctly mentioned that none of   the producers would’ve spent lavishly for churning out such sort of film that neither have technical excellence nor a catchy storyline. Moreover, it was a very bad disappointment from Vikram as he made us feel how come he accepted such a flimsy script…

2. Villu:
Preferably, this could be a film that drowned Ayngaran Productions into the troubled waters as they lost their investments.

3. Vettaikaran:
Well, this flick wasn’t so bad as Vijay’s previous film ‘Villu’ as it can be entitled as a passable show. Anyhow, the film hasn’t actually lived up to everyone’s expectations as the theatre owners and distributors were worried right from the 4th days as shows were empty.

4. Aadhavan:
With Surya’s previous films turning to be the biggest grosser at box office and K.S. Ravikumar’s ‘Dasavatharam’ creating ripples of sensation on air, everyone looked out for ‘Aadhavan’. But it was such a below average film, which would’ve urged audience to run out of theatres if Vadivelu wasn’t there.

5. Padikadhavan:
Director Sooraj churned out best entertainers in the past and with ‘Padikadhavan’, things were completely different. Overdosed heroisms by Dhanush and replacing Vivek for Vadivelu were the biggest mistakes bargained by Sooraj.

6. Yogi:
Though it was a remake of South African film ‘Tsotsi’, Ameer spoiled the beautiful touch of the foreign film by adding so many commercial ingredients. If the film’s length was not more than 1.45hrs, it would fetch some appreciations and collections as well.

7. Pokkisham:
Cheran – a man of self-aggrandizing appraisal had to fall down badly with his long-dragging drama that pushed every audience into boredom. The main reason for the film flunking at box office was the presence of aged actors Cheran and Padmapriya, who failed to evoke the sense of poignant feel amongst the audiences.

8. Sarvam:
Loosely based on ‘21 Grams’ and ‘Ameros Perros’, Vishnuvardhan failed to promote the film properly. The blatant flaw committed by the director was his new-fangled screenplay that in no way entertains the audiences. In spite of promoting the film with ‘Aarya-Trisha’ as hot pairs, the romantic part was completely missing the second part. If the tragedy had happened in the second half nearing penultimate sequence, the film would got some convincing results.

9. Naan Kadavul:
Bala is not to be blamed for spending 5 years or the theme he chooses. It’s his own wish as he has his freedom of expressing his ideas. But on pars, a filmmaker must understand the audiences’ psychologies before dropping his ideas onto the papers. Though violence and tragedy – the usual traits of Bala’s touch was present in this film, the emotional quotients were completely missing.

10. Thoranai:
We’ve no reason for the film’s loss. Usually, one can’t expect anything special from Vishal as most of his films are commercial entertainers and this one failed to present those aspects in right momentums.

Most of the producers were discombobulated with the continuous flops. Especially, it was terribly a bad year for Ayngaran Productions as both their big budget films – Sarvam and Villu were flops. Although Sun Pictures promoted some of their films vigorously, most of them were just average grosser at box office.
