Quickies mania in Kollywood

February - 6 - 2010

It’s the right to rejoice for film buffs as certain filmmakers of topmost leagues have decided to make more quickies from now on. In particular, Bala, Ameer and Selvaraghavan have already started working on their next projects with an ambitious motif of completing them within short span of time.

In the past, these filmmakers have been experimenting on long-term projects that literally pitted producers in speculative scenarios. Bala’s ‘Naan Kadavul’ wasn’t actually shot for three long years, but had nearly taken a year to finalize his actors after the shooting had actually commenced. First it was Ajith replaced by Aarya followed by continuous change of actresses. Apparently, it stalled the shooting process and later resumed with Pyramid Saimira undertaking the project.

Despites winning laurels, ‘Naan Kadavul’ failed to make it big in box office and trade analysts have labeled the film as a mediocre.

Ameer’s ‘Yogi’ can be yet another illustration that was nearly shot for 260 days though it has nothing such grandiose elements to justify on the screens.

According to the closer sources, Selvaraghavan had reportedly shot ‘Aayirathil Oruvan’ for a longer duration of 3.45hrs. Indeed, the filmmaker himself had mentioned that it took 90days to shoot the sequences involving 1000 junior artists. But again, the results were inefficient and most of those sequences involving junior artists were almost deleted.

But, it’s turning to be an era of redemption for the producers who have signed these filmmakers. Director Bala had openly confessed for spending a very long time to complete his previous projects. His upcoming film ‘Avan Ivan’ is set to likely to be accomplished within 6 months and will hit screens by December.  In the same manner, Selvaraghavan’s untitled next with Vikram has almost finished its first shooting schedule.

Of course, Ameer’s dream project ‘Kannabiran’ will be bilingually shot in Tamil and Telugu within 7 months. Talks are going on to rope in ‘Jeyam’ Ravi to perform the lead role while actor Raana, Grandson of veteran producer D Rama Naidu, son of D Suresh Babu and nephew of superstar Venkatesh will be delineated in the same role for Telugu version.

Let’s hope these maverick filmmakers extend their hands for reviving film industry with such feats so as to favor the producers and witness favorable results.
