Last time, we saw Sundar C under the credits of direction was in 2006 for the film ‘Rendu’. After a long sabbatical gap of 4 years, he is back wearing the Director’s Hat for this film ‘Nagaram’. ‘Thalai Nagaram’ dealt with a roughneck on the roads of transformation, but is suppressed by the society. Again, ‘Nagaram’ is one such flick that deals with friendship and betrayals. To be precise, the film is an exact replica of yesteryear Hollywood movie ‘Carlito’s Way’. Starring superstars like Al Pacino and Sean Penn in lead roles, the film proved to be an extraordinary showpiece that had the right mix of action and romance.

The story of ‘Nagaram’ is exactly the same as it revolves around Selvam (Sundar C), who decides to lead a good life giving up his criminal activities. He is offered a job by his boss Bhai (G Srinivasan) at Hyderabad. Tending to start a new life ahead, he comes across a dancer Bharathi (Anuya) and falls in love with her. When they decide to get married, Selvam is dragged by his past and is wedged between serious situations of helping his friend-police officer Sakkara Pandi (Bose Venkat). But sooner when the true colors are revealed his very own life at stake. Will he save himself from the clutches of fate or not forms crux of the story…

Sundar.C, could have mentioned a byline of Hollywood’s inspiration as it would have gained him appreciations. But again sticking to theft of plot, it’s nothing there to praise him. All that he has afforded is of blending the commercial elements of fun, romance, glamour and action to the tale. On the positive side, Sundar C has underplayed his role keeping far away from those heroisms that were prevalent in his previous movies. It’s best if he can exert the same performances in his future movies as well. Anuya is too choosy with her scripts, but goes for the ones that offer substantial roles. Of course, she is just 3-films old, but strikes with a spectacular show. Be the glamorous quotients or the emotions to the extremum, she is at best. Vadivelu doesn’t get more footage as in his previous film ‘Thalainagaram’ with Sundar C. He brings a heavy-dosed laughter with his comedy tracks. Unlike ‘Thalainagaram’, most of his portions appear in parallel track. Veteran actor G. Srinivasan makes an impressive performance and Bose Venkat is okay.

The lengthy duration is a big drawback as certain unwanted elements drag the film. After a particular extent, we are dragged by the uninteresting moments, especially in the second half.  The point where the true colors of Bose Venkat are revealed, the proceedings become completely unpredictable.

Technically, couple of songs by Thamman sounds good while the background score is so loud and harsh with unwanted percussions. Cinematography is okay as Chelladurai tries cranking some naturalistic shots without the over usage of filters.

‘Nagaram’ will cater precisely for the ‘B’ and ‘C’ centres as these audiences have always been the target audiences of Sundar C.
