This article is about O A K Devar but there is no picture of him at all!! At first glance seeing the number of MGR stills in the illustration for this article, Ithought it was about Devar the film producer. Devar has the distinction of making most movies with MGR. He was also known for making movies with animals. Movies like Haathi Mere Saathi, Velli Kilamai Virutham and Go Matha En Kula Maatha were huge hits in the 1970s.
The article mentions that one of Devar’s most memorable role was that of King Datchan in Thiruvilaiyaadal. Surely you all could have come up with a still of him from that movie at least?

I am one of those who heartily welcome Amala Paul — at last a South Indian girl in South Indian movies…she can look like a malayalee, a Tamil, a Telugu or a Kanignadiga unlike the Kajals, Tammanna etc who stick out like a sore thumb in South Indian movies. The measure of an actress is in not only the number of hits she gives but also in the number of movies she signs up with the top heroes. In this aspect I am disappointed with the big heroes of Tamil films like Vijay and Surya. Instead of opting for a talented South Indian like Amala Paul, the big heroes still sign up insipid Northern imports like Kajal Agarwal who has bagged two big movies with the big heroes in Tamil films. Kudos to the Telugu film world. That a upcoming big star like Ram Charan Teja decided to work with Amala Paul instead of opting for Northern imports. When will our Tamil heroes start looking at talented Southern girls like Amala?

Nadusini Naigal was a box office disaster but as a movie, it was quite good and expoerimental. Perhaps 30 years from now people will judge the movie less harshly. EDT was a remake of VTV which was very successful in TN and its Telugu version was a hit in AP and made Samantha a overnight star. The fact that it was thoroughly rejected in the North shows the deep divisions between the movie taste of north and south. Perhaps the main fault for EDT was in the casting. The hero was not a big star and it was pure casting disaster to have a white caucasian girl an Indian girl — as though there are not enough Indian stars who could do that in HIndi. For this decision, GVM deserves a rap on his knuckles.

As for the latest GVM with Ialaiyaraja…hmmm I am not so sure. If it is anything along the line of VTV it might not do well. One VTV is enough..but then again the success of KSY shows that a well made romantic comedy can work wonders with the urban crowd. We will just have to wait and see for the release of the album followed by the movie.

Bollywood actors have long realised the connection between fashion, glamour and money. So when fashion as an industry took off in a big way in India beginning in the 1990s, Bollywood stars were well positioned to reap the rewards. They have learned from their Hollywood counterparts the close link of celebritydom, fashion and movies. They have moved in to make deals with international fashion designers to showcase their clothes at public functions and movies. But alas! In the South, fashion and movie stars are mutually exclusive. Southern stars as usual are light years away from realising what a potent combination fashion and stardom can make. In the South, for example in Tamil Nadu, it is still a very common sight to top actors show up for functions in jeans and t shirt, unshaved face — most of them look as though they just got up from bed and came straight for the function. At least Telugu stars take the trouble to dress nicely and wear a proper jacket or shirt when they come for function. So is it any wonder that Bollywood stars project classiness, high fashion and sophistication while our South stars (Tamil stars included) represent sloppiness, parochialism and just plain “I-don’t-care attitude because my fans will always love me”.

Having said that, I must say so far Ajith is the only person who takes the trouble to dress up for functions. He always looks well turned out.
